Ask Your Character

This works very well on another board I post at, and seeing as there are quite a few writers here, I thought I'd try it here and see if there's any interest - I don't think you have a thread for this already, if I'm wrong, please let me know!

The idea is that three questions are posted, for the next poster to answer in-character, with one of their characters from a fanfic, original fiction - even a canon character from somewhere if you like. Anything that helps your creativity! After answering, they then leave three different questions for the next person to answer.

I'll start off with some questions:

1. If you had to choose just one, who would you say has been the most influential person in your life so far?
2. What quality do you most dislike in others, and why?
3. If you could visit a place you have never been to before, where would you go?

Great idea! I used to put my characters in made-up radio interviews and the like.

1. My mother. (looks like he's going to say more but sits lost in thought.)
2. I don't know, I never really thought about it. I guess he pretty much has all of them though huh? ("Who?" "Nevermind.")
3. I've always wanted to go back to that place just outside the city, by the waterfall. I'd like to say good-bye properly. Yeah, that's a good idea. We'll go together someday, ok kid?

Ok, since I'm so out of character in A Memory Fair but Unfinished (as it's been almost a year since I posted as Amá), I'll post as her. Amárie, I mean.

1. If you could have one wish, what would it be?
That Melkor had been unable to mar Fëanor. Such a great deal was lost from this marring, and my husband's people destroyed. So much sadness and sorrow have come upon us, even in the Blessed Realm.
2. Do you have any regrets?
No. I treasure every hour of my past, and am thankful that I did nothing cruel to mar them.
3. Do you believe in love?
What is there to believe in other than love? It is the foundation of estel, and the only true path to the heart of Eru. My love is all that has kept me going over the past ages - love, and the knowledge that Findárato is somewhere in this world.

Ok, let's see. I guess I'll just answer as my same character again. I don't know if I'll ever use him again, but I might. I like him.

"Hm, I dunno, you? Just kidding! No seriously, I didn't mean it, I think you're great. You know I was kidding right?

"... ... When my mother, I mean, when I realized she was gone and it was because of me."

"I'm not annoying. Well, I guess I daydream a lot. The general's always getting mad at me, saying stuff like 'This is WAR, sonny. Get your head out of the clouds.' He looks funny when he's mad though."

Hm... I guess he likes to hide things. The person he dislikes the most is his father.

1. The man I once loved, who placed his desire for petty revenge before me. It's not something I can forgive, and if I never lay eyes on him again I shall not mourn it. He lost my love the day he took her to his bed, Elannon curse him and consign him to the twelfth level!

2. I suppose I would have to say the day I left my parents. I was ten, it was during the worst of the Year Without Rain...*says no more, expecting the questioner can fill in the rest*

3. Annoying? Irrein says I pace too much, and mumble when I do so, and that irritates him. It can't be half as infuriating as his relentless quoting of the old texts whenever I suggest something he disagrees with.

Melkor. Is that cruel? Blasphemous, perhaps? But he has done so much harm and caused so much sorrow that I wish he were...far away.

2. What's something embarrassing you've done lately?
I had a dream that Findaráto had returned, and woke up crying. Apparently I had been sobbing so loudly that Arafinwë had heard me, and I had to explain my tears to him. He was so kind and gentle and reminded me so much of Findaráto that I could not stop the tears from coming again.

3. Which do you admire more in people, pride or humility?
Definitely humility. I have seen enough of the destructiveness caused by excessive pride.

2. If you could talk to one person who is no longer living, who would it be?
3. When you look at a member of the opposite sex, what is the first thing you see?

1. Wealth. It is quite impossible to please anyone without it. Love, on the other hand, is nothing but a liability. *smirks* Just ask the lords in the north.
2. My father. I could use his wisdom. Ruling isn't as simple as I thought it would be. Of course, if he hadn't ignored me while he lived perhaps I might be doing a better job...
3. Honestly? A threat. I've had to deal with enough ambitious, scheming men these past few months that I don't think it sensible to be too trusting.

My sister is a dear girl, and I love her very much. I sometimes wish - no, I mustn't think that. She has her talents and I have mine, and I must not covet hers.

Much the same. Here, at Arafinwë's house, watching Finámatirë grow up. He is so much like his father that sometimes it hurts to see it...

Can we post from a character from anything we are writing, not just fantasy? I write more along the lines of thriller/horror.

My worst? I've lived for some time, but I will say the relationship I have with the people I was born to, The Elves, is the worst.

*Laughs* My current one. My husband completes me. I waited an Age for someone to fill the void within me left with my father's death.

We met in war. He was a boy, but as he became a man there was no denying the pull we had to each other. Only one word could decribe this: love.

This is a new character I haven't really explored much yet.

Hmm, I think I would like to do something beautiful.

I like to walk along the shore and watch the waves on the ocean. I like to write poetry too, but I'm not very good at it.

Near the ocean, or in bed listening to the sounds through the open window. Of course, another answer might be simply "by his side".

I think I have a shortage of strong characters to use. I might just think up a couple characters and write a story around them. In other words, this thread has inspired me, and already helped in more ways than the obvious. Nice.

1. I become invisible, sneak up on it, and kill it with my knife.

I don't read too many books, I fear. After all those fairy tales where the brave knight always kills the dragon and saves the maiden, I've gotten quite fed up with them.

2. If you had a superpower, what would it be?
I'm a dragon, sweety. I need no superpowers.

3. What one place in the world would you visit, if you could?
I suppose my nature should require me to answer some place hot or fiery like the Etna, or Krakatau. But in reality I'd love to visit that little bread and breakfast somewhere between Antwerp and Mechelen. Their omelette eggs were simply to die for.

This character has a boat, so I'm gonna jump on this one. Now, nobody go cross-posting while I think of answers! It's the interest of the last character I answered for.

"I like cats. I don't own one, but I put out food for the strays sometimes. They catch mice like good little kitties."

"My work boat is called the Orion, which is ok, but I sure didn't name it. My own boat's named after your mom." (real answer: it's named after a cat he used to have)

"Got caught cheating on your mom. With your girlfriend."

Most of my characters don't like giving honest answers, it seems.

I saw my parents had died, and I shed tears. But all tears are now spent. I have a new life-quest.

Songs have no place in my life, for it is given solely to death and revenge.

Answering as Willow Oran, who in her own world is the primary (i.e only) international diplomat for the Faerie.

1. Probably the time I got kidnapped. Again. By a grandchild of that infuriating pirate at just the right time to have it cause a diplomatic incident large enough to prevent even a clumsy cover-up.

2. Really pretty scout I trained with. Way older than me, amazing flight acrobatics. Always had the best preened wings... *sigh*

3. Feels like I already do travel a thousand miles every day... I'd take the money. Ransoms aren't cheap and in a world with no land borders pirates are everywhere.

1. Anything that is in need of explanation can be found in the Declarations. Recall the story of the man of Chiltel and his desire to know the inner workings of the kheiret? *shudders* There is an appropriate amount of knowledge, and we should go no further. (There's no word for 'science' in Irrein's language, exactly, but he'd be quite against it if there were! )

2. I play the drums. Not particularly well, but enough so that I can help with the music at a celebration instead of having to reveal how poorly I dance...I wish I had more musical talent.

I only write (i.e. complete) children stories, so my main character is a child, Heather (or Hettie).

Full moon! My aunts think I'm in bed, but the Queen comes for me and then we go into the forest and I get to play tag and they taught me how to dance. *huge grin* When is the next full moon? *suddenly the smile falls away* You won't tell my aunts, will you? Please don't tell them!

My aunt Rose says you should always speak the truth. Truth will keep you alive. But aunt Daisy says that kindness will always be repaid and might save your life. I don't understand what they mean, but I don't like lying or being mean.

Eat the red one last, that one tastes best!

Setaiya, yet another of my viewpoint characters, the teenage leader of a tribal alliance:

1. My favorite? *smiles* My attendant Kirah, of course. I think she's the only one that ever really cared for me, and her loyalty never ceases to astonish me. Kirah is mother to me, and companion, and friend, and dearer to me than she knows.

2. And who do you think would say no to me, little one? *teasingly* I would have my own way, I think I have proved myself deserving. *ponders* There's no harm in taking advice, of course, but in the end the decisions are mine now.

3. It's not very often I get the chance to be alone - I can't go out without at least half my honor guard trailing after me...*sighs* There's a courtyard I visit at night on occasion, though I'm rarely alone there either, it seems to be the spot of choice for clandestine meetings between others of the household.
