Star Trek - New Movie for 2008

Sona Mobile and Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products announced recently a partnership to develop a rich content enabled mobile device offering an unprecedented level of functionality. Themed after STAR TREK communicator devices popularized by characters on the science fiction television and movie series, the special edition Communicator Phone offers fans of cool mobile technology the ability to play a multi-player, online STAR TREK game, stream real-time video, and surf the Internet as well as access ring tones, wallpapers, news, information, and STAR TREK fan activities.

The STAR TREK Communicator Phone is powered by Sona Mobile's Sona Wireless Platformℱ (SWP), which offers multi-threading capability for running several applications concurrently. The SWP makes it possible for end-users to stream video clips while simultaneously text messaging a friend or accessing information on the Internet, without negatively impacting device performance.

The phone will come equipped with a custom STAR TREK faceplate and other themed features unique to the franchise. It will be available beginning September 30, 2005.

I always thought the inspiration behind tyhe Motorola flip-phone and the 3.5" disk was the original Star Trek series....

Yes, the inspiration behind all these flip-phones was the communicator from the original Star Trek series.

This is plans to have a phone that looks more like the Star Trek communicator.

Basically a toy that is actually a real phone. I wonder who would get it besides trekkies?

Can't wait to see some pics of it........

As this thread was still hanging around for over a year and as I started it in the first place; I changed the title to bring you this news event:

Report: 'Star Trek' set for '08 revival
Variety: J.J. Abrams to take the helm

Friday, April 21, 2006; Posted: 8:32 a.m. EDT (12:32 GMT)

'Star Trek'
LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- More than three years after the last "Star Trek" movie crashed at the box office, the venerable sci-fi franchise is being revived by the director of the upcoming "Mission: Impossible" sequel, Daily Variety reported in its Friday edition.

The as-yet-untitled "Star Trek" feature, the 11th since 1979, is aiming for a fall 2008 release through Paramount Pictures, the Viacom Inc. unit looking to restore its box-office luster under new management, the trade paper said.

The project will be directed by J.J. Abrams, whose Tom Cruise vehicle "Mission: Impossible III" will be released by Paramount on May 5. Abrams, famed for producing the TV shows "Alias" and "Lost," will also help write and produce.

Daily Variety said the action would center on the early days of "Star Trek" characters James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first outer-space mission.

The paper described "Star Trek" as Hollywood's most durable performer after James Bond, spawning 10 features that have grossed more than $1 billion and 726 TV episodes from six series.

The 10th film, "Star Trek: Nemesis," bombed at the box office on its December 2002 release, earning just $43 million in North America. Last year, Viacom-owned broadcast network UPN pulled the plug on the low-rated series "Star Trek: Enterprise" following a four-season run.

Damn, Spock! You beat me to it. I saw that today in the paper and was going to scan and post it!

I can't wait to tell my dad about this one. I wonder who'll they'll cast as Kirk? They'll cast Entmoot Spock as his namesake

It might be good, though. Isn't it being done by the same people that work on Lost, or is the BF spouting bollocks again?

from waht Iv'e heard JJ Abrams is a great thinker when it comes to plots.

So...if it has Picard (I'm assuming it's a Picard movie), and Jerry Goldsmith does the score, there might be hope...

No, it will not be a Picard movie.

Jerry Goldsmith is dead and has been for 2-3 years now.

There was another story in which this director denies that its going to be When Kirk Met Spock. He basically denies even that he's the director.

An earlier rumor said they were making one that came between Enterprise and TOS (the original series), and that the script is shelved.

So long as Rick Berman has nothing to do with it... oh wait, he's probably the producer of this next one, right?

What we need is for Ira Steven Behr to make a DS9 movie. The DS9 fans have gotten verbal commitments at conventions etc. from almost all the actors, even Avery Brooks. Unfortunately it would have to be after Jadzia's death because that actress refuses to have anything to do with an Trek whatsoever. However, the Ezri actress has said she'd love to do it. So let's get Captain Sisko out of that wormhole already!!!

The news is that JJ Abrams IS the producer. No mention of Berman even being involved. The previous idea for the next star trek movie - the one allegedly between Enterprise and TOS and had a script writer etc was CANNED.

JJ Abrams producing but right now he may or may not direct it.
He didn't really deny the plot outright. He just said that it wasn't accurate and that he may not direct.

You heard it was canned, I heard it was shelved.

I'm pretty sure Berman will be involved. The problem is that while he may be a great producer, he doesn't seem to respect the Trek tradition, in that he will allow things that go against the established canon. So, as long as somebody else is watching to keep it consistent, Berman is OK.

I'd still rather see a DS9 movie.
