A challenge for all theater people

A piece of theater that I think would be really fun but extremely challenging to pull off would be the Silmarillion, There and Back Again and the Lord of the Rings strung together and performed as one huge production. This would involve creating a script as close to the orignal dialouge provided in the books with Tolkien's songs put to music. It would also require some tricky lighting and acting. Anyone interested in discussing possible ways for it to be accomlished even if only in theory?

It would be so long, it would take forever! It would have to be like an opera or something.

well obviously I would like to discuss it. It is an interesting idea. However, as I have said rather immodestly in other threads, while tolkien was certainly a tremendously talented and imaginative writer, his skills as a lyricyst are somewhat lacking. I am not sure one would want to put his lyrics to music for a project as you describe.

Perhaps this is a starting point for discussion.

Actually, I've used his lyrics quite succesfully when put to music. It is possible, it would just take a lot of dedication and some talent.

Count me in on the technical team, I'd love to do the whole thing (in full of course) as a series of afternoon-evening performances (like Shakespeare's original Hamlet, only longer!

Hobbit day 1
FotR book 1 day 2
FotR book 2 day 3
TT book 3 day 4
TT book 4 day 5
RotK 5 day 6
Rotk 6 day 7

With the Silmarillion added in between, so Valaquenta would come first, then various other.....

Reminds me of the LotR event I started writing where I had Illuvatar as a narrator....

Sweet! I'd love to help. I'm game for anything! I think the idea of spreading out over multiple performances is great.
