Funniest part?

What do you think was the funniest part in LotR?

I always got a kick out of the scene when Sam called Gollum a sneak and then he reported it to Frodo.

I haven't read it in over a year but I seem to recall that Gollum was the primary, and maybe only source of humor in the whole book.

I'm sure there's humur somewhere......

I like how Sam was always worried about rope; and also when Merry and Pippin were prisoners of the white hand orcs, when they first regained conciousness, their initial little back and forth banter was quite entertaining considering the circumstances.

The Orcish talk can be funny too.... I liked the way one Orc called another "you dung"....

I thought that the part in Rivendell after the council of Elrond when the hobbits are discussing Sam and whether Merry and Pippin should follow Frodo on his quest in be most entertaining.

"The road goes ever on and on down from the door where it began."

Hmmmm, how about the part when the dwarves fight over which is the most beautiful elf. :lol:

By far my favorite was the houses of healing scenes with the old lady imparting her wisdom on Aragorn, then the herblore master spouting off about the history of kingsfoil and driving Gandalf and Aragorn crazy... dry humor, but a good break from the heavy moment.

I always find Gimli and Legolas discussions to be quite funny, KillCount, etc. In fact, Gimli is quite funny!

I was constantly amused by the Merry/Pippin to Gandalf questioning sessions. Some of the answers that Gandalf gave to Pippin were hysterical, regretably I do not have my books on hadn right now or I would quote.

I get a kick out of the parting gifts and accompanying notes Bilbo gives to his relatives.

hmm...when at the battle gimli and legolas are bragging about who killed more people. and one of my fave quotes is:

"Bang your head on the door, Peregrin Took, and if that does not crack it, i shall have some time to think without foolish questions!"

it was something like that...

Sam's pretty funny too... I like the way he talks about sophisticated topics like elves, kings, history, etc. in his very homey accent, like comparing Galadriel to "a daffadowndilly".

And when he got soooo excited about seeing Elves, like a boy not even in his tweens

Merry and Pippin filling their stomachs at the gates of Isengard and their conversation with Gandalf and Theoden. :lol:

when Frodo put the ring on in the inn in Bree and everyone was scared

My girlfriend telling me that she doesn't trust that Strider at all... :lol:

I just lend her my book, so she started to read it. Really addictives... she read 250 pages in two evenings (I've done more in the past, but she's not a great reader usually!)

Here's my favorite funny scene, between Gimli and Éomer:

'Gimli Glóin's son, have you your axe ready?'
'Nay, lord,' said Gimli, 'but I can speedily fetch it, if there be need.'
'You shall judge,' said Éomer. 'Fore there are certain rash words concerning the Lady of the Golden Wood that lie still between us. And now I have seen her with my eyes.'
'Well, lord,' said Gimli, 'and what say you now?'
'Alas!' said Éomer. 'I will not say that she is the fairest lady that lives.'
'Then I mus go for my axe,' said Gimli........


That scene always makes me laugh.

I found it funny when Strider admonishes the Hobbits for being afraid of the stone trolls:

"....In any case you might have noticed that one of them has an old bird's nest behind his ear. That would be a most unusual ornament for a live troll!"

The Lord of the Rings is not a 'funny book', but it has humour, and certainly a good deal more than is seen exclusively in Gollum.

For myself, I don't think I could pick one part.

For long I've thought the contest between Legolas and Gimli was rather flawed, whatever they were killing. As they are killing Orcs it hasn't struck me as a horrifying element, but I never found it very funny. The whole 'joy in battle for battle' I think is a rather dangerous motive.
