Tolkien did pen this regarding the Istari, implying (at least here) that only one "returned":

And in the same version Christopher speculates it was perhaps the Blue Wizards's fate not to return.
That verse was made when Tolkien thought the Ithryn Luin were Alatar and Pallando. |
