the best way to get backstory without actually watching the movies would (a)read the books (b) play the video games or (c) watch the movies in chronological order
or you could give us a little more info to work with and we'll try to tell you what you need to know
may the force be with you

Well I have a little time on my hands so I guess I will try and start this explanation...

Episode I: Qui-Gon Jinn is young Obi-wan Kenobi's Master(and Obi-wan is his Padawan.) Together they are on a diplomatic mission to discuss negotiations with the Trade Federation, who has created a blockade over the small planet of Naboo. The Nemoidians(The name of the race of the Trade Federation) are in league with Darth Sidious and at his order the Trade Federation attempt to kill the Jedi Ambassadors on their ship. Darth Sidious also instructs the Trade Federation to deploy a full scale invasion on the planet of Naboo. When asked "...but... is that leagal?" Darth Sidious replies, "I will make it leagal!" hinting at his possible status and role. After escaping the assassination attempt Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi touch down on the planet of Naboo.

Now Down on Naboo the Jedi must reach the city of Theed and contact the ruler of the Naboo, Queen Amidala. Qui-Gon runs into a creature known as Jar Jar Binks, and after saving his life Jar Jar owes a life debt to the Jedi Qui-Gon. In need of assistance the Jedi take Jar Jar's guidence down to his underwater city of Otoh Gunga. In Otoh Gunga the Jedi secure a transport to Theed as well as a guide Jar Jar Binks (On account of his life debt).

After passing through the underwater passages of Naboo the Jedi, with Jar Jar, arrive in the city Theed. With only a small army the Naboosians are taken as POWs including the Queen Amidala, her closest advisors, and her handmaidens. The Jedi sneak through the city and rescue the Queen's POW party and together they make their way to the starship hangars. After dealing with some risistance the Queen's party, the Jedi, and Jar Jar steal a single starship and flee from Naboo. While in attempt to leave the Trade Federation commandships fire on the single ship destroying their hyper-drive forcing the group to make an unscheduled stop in Tatooine. After learning of the Trade Federations inability to hold the Queen Darth Sidious send his apprentice, Darth Maul, to search for the Jedi and the Queen.

Once on the remote planet of Tatooine Qui-Gon, Jar Jar, and R2-D2 head out to search Mos Eisley for a junk dealer with a new usable hyperdrive. Before they set out however the Queen requests that Qui-Gon take one of her handmaidens with him to learn about the planet. Qui-Gon reluctantly agrees and the four of them head out.

Once in Mos Eisley Qui-Gon and co. choose the junk shop of a Toydarian known as Wato. At Wato's shop the Queen's handmaiden learns that Wato's young, human; assistant is a slave by the name of Anakin Skywalker. Furthermore Qui-Gon Jinn learns from Wato that he does indeed have a working hyperdrive but will not sell for Republic Credits, which is all Qui-gon has. Qui-Gon leaves the shop looking for another solution to his monetary problems.

After nearly getting into a fight with a Dug, named Subulba, Jar Jar is "rescued" by the young Anakin Skywalker. Anakin continues to assist the outworlders and offers them shelter when a very dangerous sandstorm hits the city. The group is taken the Anakins home where they are introduced to his mother Smee. Anakin then takes the Queen's Handmaiden and R2-D2 to see the droid he is building, C-3P0 human cyborg relations.

At a dinner at Ani's house Anakin tells them about pod racing and how he is the only human who can do it. Anakin also discovers here that one of his new companions is a Jedi Knight. After a discussion around the table they come up with a plan to get the money to buy the hyperdrive for the Queen's transport. Anakin has built a pod racer that Qui-gon will enter into the Boonta Eve pod race, making a deal with Wato to use Anakin as the pilot. If Ani loses Wato gets Qui-Gons starship, if Ani wins Qui-Gon gets the hyperdrive and Wato gets all of the winnings, it is a win win situation for Wato. That night Qui-Gon takes a sample of Anakins blood and sends it to Obi-wan who does an analysis on it to discover that this boy has a higher mediclorean count than even Jedi Master Yoda at 20k!!! Also in that night Darth Maul arrives on Tatooine and sends remote droids to find the Queen and the Jedi.

Continued...

Episode I cont.

Just before the Pod race Qui-Gon makes another wager with Wato over the winner of the race. If Wato wins he gains Qui-Gons pod racer and if Qui-gon wins he gains Anakin's freedom. After an exciting pod race Anakin Skywalker comes out the victor! Qui-Gon gains a new hyperdrive and the newly freed Anakin Skywalker. Upon their return to the starship they are assailed by Darth Maul. Anakin flees to the ship while Qui-Gon holds Maul at bay, Obi-Wan has the ship fly low allowing Qui-Gon to flee by jumping up into the escaping starship.

While in the starship to Coruscant Anakin and the queen's handmaiden talk about having feelings for each other, temperature preference, and how things will change once they reach Coruscant. Anakin also gives Padmee a small gift, a necklace made of what looks to be some kind of ivory. On their arrival at Coruscant they are immediately greeted by the Chancellor Vallorum and Senator Palpatine. The group heads towards the Senate building while the two Jedi head to the Jedi Temple to speak with the Jedi Council. Qui-Gon discusses the appearance of the Sith trained attacker as well as the discovery of Anakin Skywalker and makes an assumption that he may be the Chosen One of the prophecy, the one who will bring balance to the force. The Council agrees to see Anakin and "interview" him.

At a senate meeting the representatives of Naboo dispute the blockade, taxation of trade routes, and the invasion by the Trade Federation. After doing nothing to help the situation Queen Amidala moves for a vote of no confidence in Chancellor Vallorum's leadership, which ousts him from Chancellorship. At the same time Anakin is interviewed by the Jedi Council. In his interview Yoda senses much fear in Anakin and says "Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering!". After ousting Vallorum three new candidates are announced for Chancellorship including Bail Antilles and Senator Palpatine! Qui-Gon returns to the council to discover that at present the council does not agree to the training of Anakin Skywalker to become a Jedi.

After all is said and done Queen Amidala chooses to head back to Naboo, the Jedi Council sends Qui-Gon, with Obi-wan, to escort the Queen in hopes of luring out the Sith attacker and discovering his true identity. Meanwhile on Naboo, Darth Sidious confirms the Nemoidian control of the planet then proceeds to tell them he is sending his apprentice Darth Maul to join them. After arriving on Naboo Queen Amidala devises a plan to enlist the Gungans to aide them in retaking Naboo and repelling their Nemoidian invaders. The Gungans are reluctant to help due to poor relations, but after a humbling act by Queen Padmee Amidala the Gungans agree to assist them in their plans to retake Theed City.

The Queens plan is to use the Gungan army to draw the attention off the city allwing the Queens small company to enter the palace secretly to secure the Vicroy of the Trade Federation, without the vicroy the entire Trade Federation will fall. With a successful diversion the Queens company is able to get inside the palace. Once inside they free several pilots in order to knock out the Droid Control ships in space (saving many Gungans from death). However after freeing the pilots the Queen's company run into a huge problem in Darth Maul. The Jedi take Darth Maul as Amidala and co. head for the throne room and the Viceroy. Anakin is told to find a safe place and hide, he chooses the cockpit of a star fighter. With R2-D2 in his company Anakin takes off and joins the dogfight in space to knock out the Droid Control Ship.

With a few delays the Queen's company make their way to the throne room and capture the Viceroy of the Trade Federation. Anakin Skywalker knocks out the Droid Control ship seemingly by accident, and the Jedi battle the Sith Lord Darth Maul. In their intense fight Darth Maul catches Qui-Gon off guard and kills him. Yet Obi-wan, with the force flowing through him manages to get Maul offgaurd and slices him in half using Qui-Gons lightsaber.

Obi-wan returns to Coruscant with Anakin and persuades Yoda to agree to allowing Anakin to be trained as a Jedi. Obi-wan passes the trials and becomes Jedi Knight Obi-wan Kenobi, master of Padawan Anakin Skywalker. [It is about this time we learn that Senator Palpatine has been voted Chancellor Palpatine and now oversees the entire Galactic Senate.] They then return to Naboo and oversee the pyre of Qui-Gon Jinn alongside Naboosians, Gungans, and Jedi Masters. In closing there is a huge viceroy parade in Naboo at the defeat of the Trade Federation and the friendship of
the Naboosians and Gungans.

Episode II coming right up, after these commercials...

Oh, just see the movies! They're fun, and you can get them all in before you see E3! I recommend re-watching A New Hope, and then the rest in release order (Empire Strikes Back, then Return of the Jedi, then Epis 1&2). That'll give you ALL the backstory you need!

Did you have any specific questions?

Incidentally, tomorrow night on cable (I forget which channel, I think Cartoon Network) they're showing the five Star Wars cartoons that supposedly fill in gaps between Epis 2&3. Hope I remember to tune in.

The cartoons are inacurate as I see it. Both the cartoon StarWars: Clone Wars and the book Labyrinth of Evil were released cannon to George Lucas' wishes. Yet the two contradict certain events at certain times. I'm not sure which, if either, is the "Pre-EP III" that would be in line with GL's design. But I did enjoy those cartoons... I especially liked the animated version of Mace Windu... funny as hell.

I finished watching the ones shown Saturday night. The first part was so-so, but I enjoyed seeing some interaction between Anikin and Padme, which may point to what we'll see in the film. But most outstanding to me was seeing the Jedi trying to save Palpatine, and Anikin's final "trial" -- saving those creatures from domination, etc. The best part was the sequence when he has the vision of that creature (in the hyroglyphics) who lost his arm to a monster, then used the new arm to save the other creatures from the monsters, then the arm begins to destroy the creatures he had previously been trying to save. Very well done, and nice symbolism for things to come for Anikin himself.

What I didn't like about it was that the battles tended to be drawn out and done in a somewhat gratuitous manner at times, as well as being a little too graphic for its Y7 rating, IMO.

i hear that EP III should start off around where the cartoon Clone Wars finished off..

The Cartoon ends with Palptatine captured by General Grievous and Coruscant under siege. A bunch of jedi have already been killed, mostly by general grievous who kills them by intimidation, was trained by dooku, and collects their lightsabers as trophies (and uses them to kill other jedi).
