Three acts?

Forgive my lack of knowledge of theater, but would it be possible to divide the show into three acts? It seems akward to have two acts for three books.

I don't know about that. I think in all the plays I've ever seen, there have only been two acts. I see your point, though.

Easily done. Most Ballets etc. have three to five acts. This gives several intervals and is a good way of keeping the audience awake- it avoids an overlong sitting- but they can still get bored if it goes on too long. Best to plan for a two act show and if it runs to 3 hours in practice have three acts.

Actually, as I have posted elsewhere, i think, the show really should be called Return of the King given that is the blk of the show. FotR is dealt with in approximately 30 pages or so of script, perhaps less. The show will definitely be only two acts with the first running approximately 1hr 40min and the second 1 hr 20mins. Hopefully if done properly half the audience will not be squirming in their seats and checking their watches 20 minutes before the first act curtain.
