I'm not sure but I think Tolkien edited it to fit with LotR as when he wrote the Hobbit he wasn't planning on writing a sequel.

I know why he changed it. He changed it becaus eapparently there was something very wrong with Riddles in th eDarkl that would not have amtched up to LOTR in any way. SO he had to give it a rewrite. Also apparently he had to fix his dwarvish as some people told him his dwarvish was wrong on the map. LOL! Imagine telling Tolkien he was wrong about his Dwarvish. HEHEHE

The ring was definately there but I think I have heard that Gollum and Bilbo played the riddle game for the ring instead but that wouldnt have worked becasue if the rign was Gollums he never would have gambled it. But I dont know what really happeneed so anyone w3ith an older edition please inform us.

I've heard this discussed somewhere - I'm not sure where but I think it is in one of the EE versions of the LOTR DVD's. I recall the son of the publisher discussing something like this.

OK, the answer can be found in the EE edition of TTT.

Apparently, in the original version of the Hobbit, Gollum lets Bilbo go at the end of the riddle game with no threat to his life. When Tolkien wrote LoTR he realised that this characterisation of both Gollum and the Ring would not tie in with the story so he rewrote the Hobbit. The newer version has Gollum totally obsessed with the Ring - an evil creature who threatens Bilbo's life.

So Gollum was a tortured soul who had managed to overcome corruptions, but in the newer edition he is the evil, twisted creature we know and love today!

The newer version has Gollum totally obsessed with the Ring - an evil creature who threatens Bilbo's life.
Tolkien explains the revision in the Prologue to tFotR:

"This account Bilbo set down in his memoirs, and he seems never to have altered it himself, not even after the Council of Elrond. Evidently it still appeared in the original Red Book, as it did in several of the copies and abstracts. But many copies contain the true account (as an alternative), derived no doubt from notes by Frodo or Samwise, both of whom learned the truth, though they seem to have been unwilling to delete anything actually written by the old hobbit himself. Gandalf, however, disbelieved Bilbo's first story, as soon as he heard it, and he continued to be very curious about the ring. Eventually he got the true tale out of Bilbo after much questioning, which for a while strained their friendship; but the wizard seemed to think the truth important. Though he did not say so to Bilbo, he also thought it important, and disturbing, to find that the good hobbit had not told the truth from the first: quite contrary to his
habit."

For more interesting info, pick up the "The Annotated Hobbit", by JRRT annotated by Douglass Anderson.

We are talking Tolkien editing it, not Bilbo!

Correct. My point was, that Tolkien felt the need to explain the edit to his readers.
