Everything Highways- Project for School

I have to do a project on highways for school, so I was wondering if you could tell me about them, dose anyone here remember what life was like before major highways (they weren't invented untill 1930, so some of you might remember)? If you can, then tell me some of what life was like, how did youi get around, how much longer did it take you est.

Do you anything about Hitler and highways? My teacher told me that Hitler created highways to move tanks and stuff, but I couldn't find any good websights about that. Any help would be appresiated here.

What are highways made of? Pavement, of course; but what else? Is there anything else under the pavement?

How long dose it take to build a mile of highway, aproxamently, in a mountain area? In the planes? At the beach? In ther desert? Any where else?

How much money dose it cost to maintain a mile of highways? In all of the landforms above, or in different weather.

Tell me what nollage you have of highways, answer the questions above, or just tell what you know. I also have a survey that I would like you to answer for school. I'll post it below this, so that they don't get mixed up. Please also tell me what country you live in, for extra info.. I need 24 intervews, but it would be neat to have some from outside the US.

Thanks alot!!!

Incidentally, unlike the US, and perhaps some other countries, our highways (we call 'em motorways) are usually made of asphalt or tar seal rather than the pavement stuff you mention (I'm assuming here that pavement = concrete?), because it is cheaper than concrete.

Here some highways are paved with asphalt and others are concrete. It depends on the amount of traffic and costs and probably someother factors - like weather.

I don't know how highways specifically are built, but I can tell you about forestry roads. (Your average gravel road usually.)

The top layer of the soil (organic) is removed to build the road. The mineral soil below has much better properties for building.

(I took a course in this last term and I can't remember most of what I wanted to tell you.)

Ballast is one of the construction materials.

What kind of things do you need to know about road construction? I could dig out some old notes if they'd be at all helpful.

I know that there's no 80-year-olds, but in some places, like where I live, we didn't get any hiqhways in our city untill 1966. We were the last city in America to get highways.

Thanks for your replys! (hopefully) my teacher will enjoy the fact that there's people from out of state and out of country on the survey! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I've gotta go to school now, but I'm gonna show my teacher the replyes I've gotten so far. Thanks

Hmmm... I know the U.S. interstate highway system was originally developed to be easily used by the military to rapidly and efficiently move eqiupment and troops between major cities ("just in case"). These highways also had (not sure if they still do) a requirement that every few miles, there must be a straight stretch of road--at least a mile long-- to facilitate the landing and take-off of military aircraft.

Not sure if you can use that, but it's interesting nonetheless.

This reminds me of the Roman roads - my son did a report on Rome, and it was amazing how well they build roads - drainage, layers, etc. Really fascinating. Maybe you can work that in, too.

Yeah, Roman roads were really straight, but they didn't cut into hills. Some highways in England follow where the Roman road was, and most are still in really good shape.

We don't put nearly as much effort into building roads now.

Ya, I'm doing a report on how people got around before mordern day highways, so I can defently work that in.

Please send in some moreanswers to my questionair. I really nead them for school. Unforchently, for whatever reason, by teacher said that I couldn't use the ones from out of the US in the report, but if you send in enoph replys from other countrys, then I can make a seprate chart. They won't count into the required 24, and I was really (and am really) mad about that, but tis the teacher's falt. Hope you don't fill mad or anything. If you do live in a different country, then send them in anyways and if I get about 10 replys (i've gotten 3 so far) from other countrys, then I'll make an extra chart. Sorry about my teacher. She wasn't in the best mood when I asked her.
