These are little pieces I found in the computer game "Arcanum", and I can't help but adore them. Almost all of them, anyway.
The sheet music can be found at http://www.benhouge.com/arcanumscores.html

The MP3's can be found at:
http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/242/arcanum.html

my favorites are "The Demise of the Zephyr" "Caladon Catacombs, The" "Villages" and "Tarant".

On a different note altogether, has anyone ever heard Ravel's String Quartet and the Violin and Cello Duo? Simply phenomenal.
EDIT: Try to get the Borromeo String Quartet version (they're both on one CD.)

I love Ravel's String Quartet. Have you heard Debussy's? Supposedly Ravel sent his score to Debussy asking for advice and Debussy wrote "don't change a note." Good call!

I'm not really big on Prokofiev's "Classical" Symphony. It's too imitative for me. But I really dig his Piano Concerti and solo piano works. I think piano was his strongest instrument.

Have you found any Szymanoski at your library? He's sort of Poland's impressionist.

Khatachurian's Masquerade is really dramatic, don't you think? It's really nice to listen to.

Yeah, he(prokofiev) wrote that he was really nervous writing anything that wasnt for piano.
this week i have listened to...

Dvorak: stabat mater
Rossini:Stabat mater(he actually didnt write all of this, his friend-or pupil-did 56% percent of the writing)
Rachmaninov: piano concertos 3+4
Grieg: peer gynt(i think this is pronounced 'pierre gahynt', feel free to correct me )
Mozart: piano concertos 21+23
Cherubini: requiem
Brahms: symphonie no.2
Berlioz: symphonie fantastique+tristia
Britten:war requiem
Chopin: polanaises(i especcially love the one in A minor)
Shostakovich: symphonie no.13(this has vocal use in it)
k. thats all.

This is great
"before he became a student at the conservatory,Hector(Berlioz) discovered that he might go to the library to study his beloved Gluck scores. He came into conflict with the school's teacher "Czar" cherubini, because he broke rules heedlessly, and helped himself to all the privileges to which he was not entitled, such as entering by doors forbidden to students, and taking home scores to study. He was in constant conflict with Cherubini, who once chased the boy around the tables in an effort to get him out of the building, probably after hours."
I LOVE IT! I Read it all the time.

I think we should have a vote on who is the greatest operatic composer.

I'll definitely second that, Hector, though I'd have to give Verdi and Wagner a very close second and third... Hard to compare those last two, however - they have such different styles that I think I'd have to give them both a tie for 2nd.

Yeah, Verdi and Wagner are very hard to compare. I think they tie. What about Rossini? I put him at seventh greatest. Berlioz I put at sixth place.

I think the two Strausses merely have the same last name.

Whoa, BEST opera composer? I like Wagner and Puccini and listen to them the most, but then Mozart is probably the greatest composer who wrote opera, but then Verdi is probably the most accomplished all-opera composer. Man what a tough opinion that would be to formulate.

huh? then why have i seen pics of them together? now there is joseph strauss, and he is not related to johann or richard.

OMG! I forgot mozart the operatic composer. To tell the truth, I havent listened to much of his operas.
Richard Strauss is also a great operatic composer. I put him on the list of ten best.

I'm a big sucker for La Boheme myself. Toscanini's was the first record I ever owned. I was 12 yrs. old and already addicted to opera. I bet there are better choices for the ultimate opera. Perhaps Aida could give it a run, but that first sweet taste of owning something I could play and memorize and sing as much as I wanted has pretty much prejudiced me towards La Boheme.

The way they included it in Moonstruck was just soooo coooooollll!!!!
