Shame - Chicago is a beautiful city, and it would have been nice to go back for the olympics.

Come on guys, it takes more than a change of president to earn an Olympics.

Besides, "right city, wrong date"..

It'll be great for Brazil, this. Go them.

And there are the stringent security measures and fingerprinting every tourist and athlete entering the USA would have to face. I imagine that might have had an influence as well.

Not to mention the fact that the majority of the IOC members aren't Europeans

Good point. Although certainly the Obama lovin/Post-Bush relief could be extended to most countries of the world.

That being said, Ive heard recently that Chicago had some financial issues that may have been a concern to the IOC and their formal olympic committee submission was put together somewhat haphazardly and without the intensive pre-planning the IOC prefers. So, if true, these certainly could have contributed to the rejection. Although they still could have spared poor Obama some embrrassment by at least stringing them on until the third ballot...

The idea of the IOC being concerned about financial irregularities is hilarious. YOu could be right of course. But it's a bit like a man in a burning house lecturing about fire safety.

Weren't there a number of recent controversies over corruption in Chicago and Illinois? That might have weakened Chicago's case.

Yes, there were - maybe that was part of it - but I'm glad for Rio - first time that a South American country has had the Olympics - good for them!

The sour grapes comments by some of the Chicago people were just ridiculous. Come on, be gracious to the winners! Hopefully most of them were.
