a balance that must be kept. This is not a choice it is the way of the universe. Without good there can be no evil etc. We were drawn here to balance the scales. the cost might be high but we are bound to do this. We are upstream right now and there seems to be much activity coming from the mouth of the river. I suggest we head that way through the forest."

"Is there no other way than that? Perhaps around it." Anywhere was better than that forest to me...even Mordor itself. Dagger looked up as I said this. She was the only one who knew... and it would stay that way, for as long as it could.

I hung my head and nodded a bit, and shoved Dagger off my foot. Sitting down, I pulled out a book.

"It is niether a map nor a spell book. It is an old...nevermind." I snapped the book shut, and handed it to Dagger, who stuck it in a bag. Another chill wind blew through. "As much as I resent to, I shall go wth you to the rivermouth."

She had been looking forward to a peaceful journey, but her life had never been peaceful for long. The griffin realized that she had been called to these woods, and she knew what she must do.

We started out, the wizard on his horse, I on Hurricane, and the other, where was her ride? No bother. "I shall tell you, when we are near it." I had said this to both of the travelers.

Aralle nodded and signaled for Rain, who had been hiding nearby ever since the owlbears arrived, to come. The griffin smiled at Rain, stroked his nose for a moment, then mounted the horse. When she and her companions came closer to whatever evil they must face, Aralle would probably release Rain for a time. But for now, she sensed, the horse was in no danger.

Down the road, they came across what had clearly been the scene of a small battle. The woods were hacked the ground disturbed. Dried blood was everywhere. All about were broken arrows and swords. On the ground were several dead goblins.

"These goblins were met with far more force than they could handle," said Aralle, glancing at the bodies in disgust. "Every weapon is broken."

Aralle ran to the site and started inspecting some of the weapons.

"These swords are not flimsy; they wouldn't have broken easily. Nor would the arrows. And..." Aralle paused, as her keen eyes caught sight of something rather unnerving.

"Conner. Come take a look at this!" called the griffin.

A single set of tracks led off into the woods. Aralle hoped the wizard would recognize them; the griffin had a sinking feeling that she already had.

No. It's impossible. They are no more. And yet, the tracks are very similar indeed. What is brewing in these woods?

I hopped off Hurricane, and lookecd around. Nezt to one of the corpses, lay his sword. I lowered my hood to reaveil jet black hair with blue flames, the same that danced on the tail of Hurricane. I took one of the Daggers out of my hair. "The blue fire." I muttered, not expecting them to know what it ment.
