I don't know about John Wayne...I don't see him as either Aragorn or an elf. Maybe Theoden...

Yul Brynner?? How about having him play Denethor???

You're still stinging from Imrahil getting cut in the movies, aren't you, Val??? Still, I can't see John Wayne pulling it off...I see Imrahil more as a Brian Blessed type (he's a British character actor -- played Marian's father in "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves")

Oh no... I knew cuts had to be made... and Imrahil probably made sense... unless you want to add enough to have a 7-8 hour movie (which some of us here would like, but which wouldn't make box office / production sense). As the idea of 'time-warp casting' is fantasy anyway, I think we can include all characters.

No - John Wayne is not REALLY the image I had of Imrahil anyway... just trying to work him in... Halbarad?

Hahaha! Blessed was way funny in Black Adder.

Anyway, I can totally see Richard Burton as Elrond.

I am not sure that casting these actors of another era is right . They were giants in their day . I mean who'd direct ? John Ford ?

Why not the best? Alfred Hitchcock!

...or Frank Capra for a little whimsy... (perhaps he'd do better with The Hobbit...)

I'm trying to think where we could use that one actor from some time back... Ronald Reagan or something? Doesn't have to be a MAJOR role or anything... but maybe Halbarad? Or Mablung or Damron? Or Benedril... oh wait, don't have my books and I'm having a mind-blank, who's that soldier who shows Pippin around?

Or - do you guys think he should get a more major role? Denethor?

Flipping channels this weekend I saw a few minutes of an old Tarzan movie. Johnny Weismuller had quite the physique... and wasn't ugly either. Do we have a good Dunedain role for him? He didn't naturally talk like that either ('Me Tarzan, you Jane' kind of thing! ).

Benedril?? Wasn't he the Allergist of Gondor???

Beregond was the guy you're thinking about. I can see Reagan as Denethor...a pretty good choice, actually.

The movie "My Man Godfrey" (1936) has an excellent actor William Powell. He has a wide range of acting ability. He could easily play a noble or a ranger.

These are so funny!
Here's a few:

Audrey Hepburn as Arwen- she's just got that smooth, gentle beauty of an elf;

Ingred Bergman as Eowyn- she's that tough-cookie type, perfect for the disparing-over-lost-love-by-going-to-die-in-battle role;

Walter Brennan as Tom Bombadil (or maybe Bilbo?)- great guy! I can just see him singing the derry-dols!

Yul Brenner (why do I think I'm spelling that wrong?) as Boromir- come on! He'd be great!

Gary Cooper as Gandalf- okay, a little unconventional, but he's got that twinkle in his eyes, that quick-to-anger but also jolly way about him;

Leon Ames as Elrond or Denethor- I couldn't resist. He'd be so... Leon Ames!

And Maureen O'Hara as Rose Cotton- "Well now that you've wasted a year of your life...." Firey Irish-lass- gotta love her.

Last night I couldn't sleep - turned on the tube and The Big Country was on. Great movie - and I had never seen it all the way through. Stars Gregory Peck, Charlton Heston and Burle Ives - and features Chuck Connors (I think that's his name - from old TV show The Rifleman). THAT movie would give you a good idea of what Peck was like when young enough to portray Aragorn... just confirmed my previous notions. Rent it if you want to check it out.

Heston is good as always... and I started wondering about Connors - he shows more in that movie than he did in the TV shows, I think - though his character is a bit unsavory (maybe a great Boromir?).

The Yul Bryner idea was interesting - but how about Denethor? Mrs. Maggot - we were already talking about Reagan - even possibly as Denethor. I even wondered about Patrick Stewart as Denethor ("Make it so!").

Can anyone see Burle Ives as Tom Bombadil? He'd sure have the singing part down (as well as the physique!).

WHAT?! Oh, no! not him! You must forgive me, but Heston is one of the worst actors on the planet, IMHO. To see HIM playing one of my favorite characters would be adequate cause for a nervous break-down.

Um, Burl IVES??!! Are you sure? Somehow I really don't think Goldberry would see anything in Burl Ives Or maybe I've got too much singing-snowman in my head "... but do you recall, the most famous reindeer of allllll.... RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER!..." *starts going crazy*

Ooh sorry, didn't see that! Must be more conscientious and not skim-read in future. He would be a really good Denethor. A politician's LotR could be interesting too… with Churchill as Gandalf!

I don't know what you guys see in Charlton Heston. Way, way too American for the role.

The first actor from the past I would put in LOTR is Laurence Olivier. Probably as Elrond, but he also works as Saruman, Gandalf or even the voice of Treebeard. Olivier, in everything from his Shakespearean work to the likes of Spartacus, was a legendary presence and would be a perfect fit in Tolkien.

Audrey Hepburn as Arwen? That would be a dream come true - those of you who suggested that are absolutely on the ball.

As for Eowyn, Diana Rigg immediately comes to mind, though she has dark hair.

Saruman could be one of many classic Avengers villains. I still think Christopher Lee would be the best, but one could imagine Michael Gough or Peter Cushing in the role for sure.

Peter Lorre as the voice of Gollum, of course.

If you give Saruman, Gandalf or Treebeard to Olivier, then give Elrond to Marlon Brando.

Omar Sharif as Aragorn. I kid thee not.

Humphrey Bogart as Frodo.
