My favorite names are Earendil, Imrahil, Celebrimbor, Mithrandir, Finduilas and Earwen. As for place names, I like Alqualonde and Imladris. I love the way Rauros makes one think of rushing water. Also, Caradhras has a wonderfully malevolent sound that just fits the mountain. And Cirith Ungol too: it makes me shiver. Tolkien had an incredible genius for name-making.

"Ahab, is that you?"

No, Randy, it's not. However, when I was typing out my example of an *ahem* entish name, I noticed that one of the syllables was ahab. Thus I translated accordingly.

Since you're so fond of sindarin translations, it's me, Ersaeliphant.

Actually I'm better (but horrible) at Quenya. Hmmm. You must be either Morthoron or Anon101, judging by the use of 'Randy'. I would guess Morthoron as he (or you if my guess is right) has I would say more Sindarin at his command than Anon101. You could also be ?????, come to think of it.

'Er' probably means 'one', I have no idea about the rest of the name. But welcome to Entmoot, whoever you are!

Nazgul

"Actually I'm better (but horrible) at Quenya"

Really? How very insipid of you.

In any case, you could translate my name:

Er = One
sael =Wise
iphant =Old

So 'Old Wise One' or 'One having wisdom undiminished by age'

Actually, a more direct translation would be Tithan Ersaeliphant, 'Little old wise one' which is a translation of the Irish 'Seanin', aka 'Shannon'.

So you guessed right after all.

After I made that post, I was looking around at the others, and I decided it couldn't be Morthoron, and Anon 101 became increasingly unlikely. Had to be you

Glad you made it over here. Amandil arrived recently as well. I suspect there's more of you here than I am aware of.

I should like to make an Elvish name for you in Quenya. 'Old Wise One' shouldn't be too hard.

Just looked through Ardalambion. Linyenwa meant 'old' and nolmo is 'wise person', but put together it's five syllables, and would not have the same precise meaning. For 'old' among those who spoke Quenya in the Elder Days did not connote weakness. Linyenwanolmo, it's just too long.

A shortened nick-name might be Linyenwo.

Easterlinge, I made a mistake earlier. I told you that Tolkien purposed to changed Haldad's name to Halbar. Not true. It was Haldad's son: Haldar that was to be changed. Halbar was Taliskan (the language of many of the Edain in their early days) for 'chieftain' (hal 'head, chief' + bar 'man'). You're probably interested to know that 'Haldad' belongs to Taliska as well, it means 'watchdog'.

I love the names in Middle Earth. I have a passion for cool names in stories (My favorite so far is Nibasi, and that name belongs to ME, I made it up for one of my many stories)

Mithrandir
Imladris
Istari
Legolas - so many ways to pronounce it too!
Arwen
Melian
Ilmarë
Noldolantë (actually the name of a song)
Aranwë
Atani ...actually, this means the second child, or men...it's sounds really nice though...Atani...
Ellemirë
Eönwë

There are more, but I'll post them later.

I like Ecthelion more and more (my horrible elvish sense tells me it means 'Fountainson' Is it right?)

I also like Sirion, R*an (), Laurelin, Nan-tasarion, Fimbrethil, Ilmarë, Kementári, Nessa, and many, many others.

Names like poems.
