Thanks for the encouragement Renille, I'm looking forward to World Hist next year (10th grade). Guess what I have this year? American history.

concerning joans battle skills

as for joan :

"Most of the time in battle, she carried her standard and was a non-combatant. She did not want to kill anyone. Her job was to lead, guide, and direct them."

however she did reportedly kill one person supposedly a knight

some other stuff on joany

According to the Duke of Alençon, Joan's sword was destroyed in Saint Denis, when she lanced it through the back of a prostitute, most probably after the failed attack on Paris. It seems that Joan was in the habit of stiking her sword across the backs of any prostitutes that she would come across; such incidents being reported in Auxerre by Jean Chartier and this page, Louis de Coutes for the stage of Chateau Thierry. Charles VII showed himself to be most displeased upon hearing that the sword had been destroyed, as amongst Joan's companion, the sword was reputed as a somewhat magical weapon, and therefore its' destruction was seen as a bad omen. We have no clue as to what became of the broken pieces.

the samurai would probably be at a dis advantange. The samarai were into the one strike one kill scenaro. their swords had sharp edges but where not really made to go against armor and shields. Also samurai armor was would not be overly affective against the heaver euro weapons

there is a palce called sword forum international that discusses this however at this time they are revamping the site so the article are temporarly of line

Theoden

First off I'm incline to agree with BeardofPants about Hannibal. True he did very well as long as he was on the attack but in LOTR the good guys are fighting defence whitch just isn't Hannibal's stongest point.

Second I would like to say that taking a run of American History courses is better than what I had to put up with, year after year of the Aztecs and the Incas. So cheer up it could have been worse.

Finally I would have to go with Alexander the Great or Richard the Lion Heart (Richard would probably be more acustume to the style of warfare in LOTR).

I'd probably go for some of the better Celtic generals around Roman times, either that or William Wallace. He was an inspirationaal force and he could fight. lus he was used to that type of fighting already(defending against vastly superior forces)

Why would we have to take someone from the pre-gunpowder era? What's wrong with Robert E. Lee? He was probably the most brilliant strategist of his time. Does the fact that his armies had guns diminish his leadership and commanding abilities? Or does the pre-gunpowder thing mean that since they didn't have it in Middle Earth, you would want someone who was familiar with their fighting style?

I would go with Hannibal. He used really good military tactics. He was alone behind enemy lines with no supplies or support. He caused a whole lot of damage while he lasted. He would be my choise for general in middle earth. He would problably find a way over the mountains into mordor and sack baradur, or at least cause a really good diversion so the ring could get through.

Well surely an English general would be the best choice? The British Empire was the largest empire the world had ever seen and we were the smallest country ever to have an Empire.
So I sall choose hmm, so hard, so many brilliant English tacticians...
EITHER
Lord Howard of Effingham (Led the English Forces to defeat the Spanish Armada)
or the Duke of Wellington.

Gandalf

As it happens, I shared this topic with my mother (who has not only read LOTR but is also a history fan) and her choice was Henry the 5th. Who defeated the French nobility (a force that was suposedly unbeatable) useing mainly archers armed with the longbow.
