a questoon for the people who play games-workshop WOTR

1) can a hero die in combat like a normal soldier?-it only mentions that the player MAY wish to remove it as a casulty. why would you want to?

2)how do you resolve the dwarf combats where they have a tower shield and a pike man right behind them? I thought the soldiers all have to be the same?

this is for the new war of the ring rule book. i new to it.
