Hey all, this should be a simple, fun, and educational thread! And who doesn't love that?!

Lol, ok, basically I thought it would be interesting to tell the forum about interesting things you may have learned recently, this could be pop culture trivia, LotR-related information, scholarly tidbits, whatever... just give us your knowledge.

And please start your post with a "Did you know..."

So, to begin..

Did you know that water is actually blue?

Did you know...Denver was the only place to not accept the invitation to the olympics? in 1973 i think? b/c of all the polution it would cause

I thought ocean water just reflected the sky.

The water I drink is pretty clear....I think...

I swear it's true that water is blue! (haha... rhyme...)

The water molecules are actually a very faint blue... you just need them in pretty large quantities to see this.

Try filling a white bathtub with water sometime... you can see a definite blue tinge to it and there is no sky to reflect off of (unless you bathe outside, which I suppose is not impossible)

I think the sky reflection must be a factor though. The water is usually the same tint as the sky, whether it's blue or gray or purple or what have you.

Like Flynn said, you need large amounts to see it. Water is in fact an intrinsically blue chemical, like sulfer is yellow. But if the sky were the reason, water would be more white alot of the time. It has more to do with radiative transfer and the scattering and absorbtion of light particles and energy. Water really is fascinating.

Did you know...that roughly 2500 left handed people die yearly using products designed for right handed peopole?

Yeah, like I said, I looked it up to check and we're kind of both right.... it is intrinsically blue, but the reflection of the sky does factor in as well.

Did you know that you can teach an octopus to open jars? That would be useful to have around the house....

Funny thing about octopi, you dont really need to "teach" them alot. Many of the behaviors are instinctual. They are capable of learned behavior, however, and extremely so.

I also learned that they tend to forget the behaviors they learned rather quickly, so you have to reteach them a lot... is this accurate, based on what you know?

Not really. They seem to retain alot of the information they take in. But I suppose that it varies from individual to individual. I've kept several, and they all seem to learn at their own pace, with some engaging in very "social" behavior with me, and several people I know, even responding to repeated signals to come to the surface of the tank.
