Vocabulary for food

This is a fun game I came across: FreeRice

You get vocabulary questions you have to answer, and for each good answer you donate 10 grains of rice to the UN food programme.

It starts with easier words and then gets harder with words like deciduous, caucus, neonate and evanesce on which I seriously stumbled. And before you know it, you've made a sizable donation.

I managed to get to level 40. Enjoy!

Say that looks pretty fun, I'll give it a shot. (if it'll load)

Edit: Oh! Made it to level 50 vocab, but was thoroughly confounded, and didn't get any higher. But wow, in a short time, it seems I've contributed a sack of rice by now!

You are both helping end hunger and sharpening your wits! (Though, at times, I was very tempted to go running to the dictionary to cheat)

That's a very nice initiative! I should play more and get my level up! I'm going for 50 off course

Whew, my brain is finished for today... But some pretty awesome words, I have quite the list of new ones to throw into a conversation, just to get some strange looks!

This is cool! I could only get to 40, but I'll keep trying. It's interesting to look at the totals page and see how the site has gained popularity and donations. Thanks Eärniel!

Gee sis, is that a touch of criticism I hear? *sniffs sadly*

I could have posted it in Entertainment, but I thought it could fit here too. (Tessar, you're free to kick this thread if you don't agree.) Didn't stick it in advertisement, 'cause I thought people might find it fun discussing some of the tough words or wanted to compare the levels they reached. As for older threads, the rules state: "[..]to see if the topic has been touched recently. If it has been discussed in the past 4 pages of the forum, or the past six months, use the original topic." So no need to go looking for something I remember from years ago. Couldn't remember anything either, or I might just have added it there.

That's fun! I made it to 43, then slid down to 42. I'll have to look up one word that was weird - "Potlatch"? It's a feast. Now I've heard of "Potluck" for a feast, but not "Potlatch"!

Anyway, it was fun, and hopefully helpful, too.

I see you already looked it up but I couldn't help myself.

potlach n.

A ceremonial feast among certain Native American peoples of the northwest Pacific coast, as in celebration of a marriage or an accession, at which the host distributes gifts according to each guest's rank or status.

Between rival groups the potlach could involve extravagant or competitive giving and destruction by the host of valued items as a display of superior wealth.

Just a wee banter. My preference (which has the weight of law absolutely nowhere) is to keep the General forum hopping and let newer (and/or younger) posters have a little slack. I think it's discouraging to have posts moved, when you labored over something to say to a room full of cyber strangers who all seem to know each other. And that happens quite a bit, as a percentage, when folks are new. So, I saw a bit of irony in your posting this here, that's all. Being a brat, I brought it up. Good old Robbie Burns.

"Oh what a gift, a gift to gie us, to see ourselves as others see us."

Oh? fiffty tops? Eh, serves me right for not reading instructions.

But good lord, the last one I did had me stumped, until I remembered a strange line from shakespeare about "welkin", (which is sky) and the none of the choices were of the same...

Until I remembered firmament

According to this BBC article the game has provided already for 1bn grains of rice, capable of feeding 50 000 people for one day. Not bad for a little game on the internet.

That would be the Coast Salish people. It's not only a feast, but an important occasioin to ensure wealth is fairly distributed, people are keeping up their responsibilities, solializing, and probably lots of other stuff.

Anyway I got to 41. I should try more later. Eärniel I'm very impressed at your English vocab by getting to 40!! Awesome. And Sane, 50 is brilliant. You guys are smarties.

I had to dig deep to get that score. I'm certain my language exams in school were easier. I've made my sister try the game and she got to level 45! But then again she always had a head for languages (she knows twice as many languages as I do) and she won the School Prize for English in highschool.
