That's my motherland at work, right there.

My dog killed a squirrel a few days ago, and I had to get rid of it. Now I'm going to have to protect my dog, just in case they try to take revenge. Thank you for posting that, now I know what they are capable of.

Squirrels are those little creatures that invade my branches and eat my acorns up. I liken squirrels to parasites. They live off of me. They might explain why I am the mother of only one seedling!

Actually, squirrels don't eat every seed they collect, and sometimes they forget about entire stashes of nuts and seeds! Squirrels help spread seeds throughout the forest. </forestry geek>

Besides, Ents and Entwives take care of their offspring, and invest a lot more resources into them than ordinary trees do. That's why they have much lower fecundity. </forestry and Tolkien geek>

My university is so full of squirrels, I don't even get excited when one is only a meter away from me! My fiance and I were walking on the campus and he said, "Look! A squirrel!" and I deadpanned, "Wow... a squirrel..." because, yeah.

However, when I see one in the forest I get excited, because then I'm seeing a wild animal, not a pouffy-tailed-garbage-rat.

Same with woodpeckers. I remember researching for a project on woodpeckers, and coming across an article written about the particular species of woodpecker I was investigating; the scientist who wrote it recounting once having actually seen a small oak tree high up in a larger tree, where a woodpecker had left the acorn, and it actually sprouted.

There is a squirrel fight in the tree outside my window right now. Lots of squeaking.
