Who's your favourite Merlin???

Mine is Mary Stewart's. I've always felt she did the best job with him in her trilogy: The Crystal Caves, The Hollow Hills, and The Last Enchantment. So, who's your favourite?

As far as portrayals of Merlin in literature go? My favourite take on him would have to be Susan Cooper's in The Dark Is Rising.

Either the one in Jack Whyte's Dream of Eagles cycle or that of the Marion Zimmer Bradley Avalon books.

Both really seem like real people. Thanks for the suggestion to re-read the Mary Stewart ones though.

well i love Mary Stewards books but my mom wont let me read the merlin trilogy till I'm 16

but at 12 she let me read some of them by my self, and now that im 13 I can read evan MORE!

So far my favorit is "Madam will you talk?" but i also like "The stormy Petral" and "Thorny hold"

now that I'm 13 I can read "My brother Michal" "tuch not the cat" and a few others.

so tell me. is there magic in the merlin trilogy?

Depends what you call magic. If magic is a matter of spells and suchlike, no. If magic is a matter of education, medicine, planning and bloody good timing, then yes, there is magic in the trilogy.

It is a good book, tho the lack of spells disappointed me as well to begin with. Stewart's Merlin is one most people like very much, I have found. And Mary Stewart is an excellent story teller. I think I was 13-14 when I picked the Merlin Trilogy up the first time, Tess. It's fifteen years later and I still like 'em.

Oooops, I have just relegated myself to the senile group again.

I agree that all the Merlins mentioned so far are wonderful Merlins, but my personal favorite is the Merlin in T. H. White's "The Once and Future King". And my favorite part of that book is the first part "The Sword in the Stone", which is all about young Arthur (Wart) and Merlin.

The Coming of the king is Okay, a little jumbled though....
my favourite is Stephen Lawheads........(Apart from that travesty Pendragon, which was truly awful, Almost as bad as David Eddings)

My favourite is Mary Stewart's Merlin. The Crystal Cave is so far my favourite Arthurian story and Arthur is hardly in it. Her Merlin was very special. Most story Merlins are powerful and mysterious. Her Merlin was just a very extraordinary person. I wanted to cry when he lost his mentor. It was very refreshing to see a story of his childhood and youth. You get to see him grow.

I agree with some and disagree with most.
Merlin reading allows one to see how he is percieved by different writers. OAFK, M.S., 3X all have different aspects.
Indeed Merlin is an enigma supported by perception.
