Re: Oh yeah
Princess Bride, Willow on ground of plot, and.....Ladyhawke! I loved that movie.
"We've come full circle, Lord.I'd like to think there is some higher meaning in all of this. It certainly would reflect well on You." -Phillipe Gaston "Are you flesh, or are you spirit?" -Phillipe "I am sorrow."- Isabeau Actually, I could see Luthien saying Isabeau's line there too. Sometimes. |

Film Hobbit! I'm shocked!
Wash your mouth out with soap! Tsk! You should be ashamed! I'll have to look for The Last Unicorn and Willow. I LOVE Peter S Beagle! I also love the faery folk, so those sound perfect.

Most fantasy movies to me are sub par but I'm a harsh critic I HATE FLUFF.
The Princess Bride because of the above doesn't rate on my list. I thought Willow was good BUT after I watched again as an adult I felt it was too lite. Some mentioned some Sci Fi but I will exclude them. As well as historicall based fictions. Like 7 Seven Samurai, Braveheart and Gladiator. Nor will I include animation. I hope that LOTR will be But has anyone seen DRAGONSLAYER? It is from the early 80's pre CGI but THAT dragon looked better than anything I've seen. ( except for one small part) To me this was a good fantasy movie (i.e. lite on pop fluff) aside from this Conan the Barbarian NOT The Destroyer Excalibur I thinK was a sub par movie it relied to much on the Morte de Arthur. Sir Thomas Mallory's Frano-dephiled version that must take as the standard myth. Guess what there was no Lancelot or any of his Franophone cronies in the old myth. ANYWAY, the use of the Camina Barana was great AND the LANGUAGE was SUPREME. " If a boy has been choosen king then a boy shall be king" Patrik Steward pre-Picard. I do think the rebirth of Arthur was cool. Paraphrased: ( Arthur) I did not know how empty my soul was until it was filled. For far too longI have lived through others. My knights have fought my battles. Lancelot my honor. Guenivere my guilt. Mordred my sins. Now brother it is time for me to be king. (Kay) Guards, knights, squires prepare for battle! and of course! Anail Nathrach Uatha Bha'is Bith Thonn Du'iseacnt Le De'anamh E!..." (Serpent's breath Death's Cave and Waves of Being Awaken with making!) ..........Merlin I think I'm gonna make that my signature right now.

Does "Brazil" qualify? It's not really comedy or sci-fi (unless you include Dr. Suess technology under that definition).
Gotta give props to "Wizard of Oz," considering it was done in '38 or so. Being the first color film, it probably bedazzled people more then than all the Star Warses, Poltergeists, etc. put together did in recent times. What category does "Altered States" fall under? Were we looking more for the magical mythical stuff? "Labryinth" was pretty creatively done. I agree that "Princess Bride" belongs. Gotta love any movie with Columbo in it. It's certainly not too soon for me to decide that "LOTR" belongs. Imagine what it will be like to be able to watch 9 hours of this in a couple of years!

"The Last Unicorn" is a beautiful movie. I never read the book though. Parts of it make me so sad, but the story is so good. When I first watched it, I was too young to understand some of the nuances, but I saw it again years later and loved it.
Miyazaki's movies are also very good. But my favourite of his is "Nausicaa". Also a very good story with characters you can care about. |

I forgot about that one. Yes, The Last Unicorn. I said no animation BUT I here I'll make an exception.
