Who was he?

Who was the bag guy that sold the Hobbits that poor pony. I don't know how is he called originally (I have read only the Russian version), but I don't understood what race he was. (also, please add his English name, so I'll know)

Can't remember his surname, but his first name is Bil. He's human. Well, I can say no more then...

That is right. Bill Ferny, that creepy little man. I believe Sam named the pony Bill after him.

Yes, it was Bill Ferny. I haven't read the books in a long time (gotta do that one of these days ), but I seem to recall rumors that Ferny and/or his Bree companions were half-orcs.

there were... I can't remember where exactly. I don't think it was Ferny himself, though... maybe it was his companions.

((well, there's another quote to find... everyone go to TRIVIA GAME! ahem. sorry. )

Ferny was man, but he had business with Saruman's half-orcs.

Yes... proving how skilled Hobbits are with their movements.
So it is also appropriate Sam named the pony Bill. Horses do like apples...

I thought he was a Man, but wasn't sure.

Thanks for the name.

The chapters to see for Half-orc references (in relation to Ferny and others of his sort) are Strider (Book I), Flotsam and Jetsam (Book III) and The Scouring of the Shire (Book VI). Bill Ferny was just a Bree-lander, as far as I know. The 'squint-eyed southerner' in Bree was a Dunlending, at least partly. He was outcasted from Dunland because the Men there said he had Orkish blood. Most if not all of Sharky's Men in the last book were part Orc.
