What is the Silmarillion about?

I know It is a basis of LOTR or thats what I've heard. But how is the book organized? is it one main sotry line like LOTR? or is it short stories. or does it look like an encyclopedia type index sort of reference book?

The Silmarillion is like a history book with historical stories and accounts from the First Age and more. It is broken down into four major sections.

1. Ainulindale- This is the music of the Ainur

2. Valaquenta- Quenta Silmarillion- This is pretty much the body of the book relating stories of the Exile and return of the Noldor, along with tales of their realms, and the coming of Men. The battles and destruction and ruin of the Elven realms, plus the accounts of Beren and Luthien. Hurin and Turin and others.

3. Akallabeth- This is an account of Numenor. Its destruction, and the Second Age.

4. Of The Rings Of Power And the Third Age.

After that, there is a geneological table and an appendix of elements in Quenya and Sindarin names.

A wonderful book. You should read it sometime. It is my favorite.
