Not having been in Russia and not having read any Russian books (Just deemed them dull because of the subjects they've chosen to write about.) I suppose one has to at least read one or two to get a proper impression of Russian literature. Would you suggest "War and Peace" as a beginning?

No, not 'War and Peace' no, definitely not to begin with .
Try some Anton Chekhov short stories first, and Dostoyevsky.

Any Andreyev fans? "The Red Laugh" is one of the surrealest, most interesting stories I've ever read. My favorite Tolstoy so far, and I've only read a few short stories of his, is "The Death of Ivan Illych." I guess I like morbid psychological peices about death, but in that catagory, these two are at the top. Any thoughts?

Argh, I guess I missed this thread when it was created...actually, I started a thread about Russian literature once before, but the topic wasn't nearly as creative!

I've read Anna Karenina, a few other Tolstoy (sometimes when I go to write Tolstoy I write Tolkien. Must be from typing the address to Entmoot so many times....) short stories, Crime and Punishment (my favourite), some Pushkin, A (One?) Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, Dr. Zhivago, The Gambler (Dostoyevsky), The Bet and this other play by Chekov that I liked but can't remember the name of...and a couple other short things. I liked Anna Karenina alright when I read it, but now that I've read other things, it doesn't seem quite as good. I have yet to read War and Peace. Probably next on my list is The Brothers Karamozov. I tried reading it once immediately after I finished Crime and Punishment, but I wasn't ready for another book. I think I'll go to the library today.

EDIT: I haven't read anything you mention, Menelvagor, but you have 900 posts! Congratulations!

We have something by Solzenihtzin (I really jumbled the spelling on that one).

And....drum roll please...I started "The Brothers Karamazov". About 1/7 of the way through it.

See my post in the "what are you reading" thread, I forget the translator right now.
