To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my fave books. It's entertaining, but also provides an insight to the racial prejudice etc of that era. I really enjoy books like that, such as the Power of One by Bryce Courtenay, which describes some of the racism of the South Africa's Apartheid era, with a white male as the victim instead.

Finally! My friend has got TKAM! Can't convice her to read Tolkien tho...
Me: Here's a link to yes, an ENTMOOT page. Just ignore all the Tolkien stuff- you won't understand - you're not Tolkienited.
Her: I'm glad I'm not
Me:

At least she has TKAM. Just finished an essay on it. Pretty easy.

Guess which movie character won "Best Hero" in the American Film Institute's list of top screen heroes? Atticus Finch! I'm so glad about this because he beat all those traditional heroes- muscly, adventurous men - Indiana Jones, James Bond (who came 2nd and 3rd respectively) I am very glad that he is acknowledged - I believe Gregory Peck portrayed Atticus admirably.

I have to read this book for summer reading - that and Catcher in the Rye.

No one ever likes books when assigned for school - especially over the summer. MAYBE i'll try to enjoy this book, but there mere fact that I will be forced to read it against my will AND the fact that I have to write many essays on it and do many many assignments....

School just kills books - it really does. What is the fun of reading and stopping every chapter? What is the fun of being quized on every little detail? no one wants to be quized or tested on a book.... what is the fun of having to write chapter summaries and writing essays about it???

Oh well.

Re: Re: To Kill a Mocking Bird

I read TKAM for my bookclub. I know it's supposed to be about hard times and tough issues, but I really didn't like it. It was boring, and the knowledge that I'll be reading it again this year took away any amusement I might have gotten from the book.

actually, I enjoyed it very much and didn't really like catcher in the rye. Catcher = boring , but to kill a mocking bird held my interest.

A very interesting read!

When did it take place? 1940s? Obviously before civil rights movement, but it was hard to tell....

I mean: they never mentioned WW1 or WWII - which would have just ended, but they must have made at least a dozen or more remarks about the Civil War that would make you think it was only decades after that... I guess that was more important to the south then

One of the best books written ever! [IMO, offcourse] and this coming from a guy who loved Silmarillion almost as much as the former.

It contains some of my favorite all time quotes. Just a very great book. An not only due to the whole race prespective, I loved the book mainly because of Scout and her attempts at coming to grip with the life she is expected to live. They sort of remind of LMM's Anne books [Although the characters are considerably different in both books, apart from Scout who shares major similiarities with scout, the rural backdrop and the rich language are things in common] , just a more realistic, grittier and better version of them.

Just started reading it, not very far yet though. Seems good, so far Atticus is the man. (quite literally as well, when I think of it, as so far there haven't been any other men with the exception of Mr. Radley (spelling?) and his sons, shown in retrospective.)

You'll see some later. Atticus's a great character and it's probably strange by I sort of get a huge kick out of saying Atticus Finch out loud....

P.S: Thanks for the links. I allready visit that ASoIaF board [though not registered there] and took a peak at the other sites you gave me. Thanks a bunch. That Jordan thread was really funny. :P

Hehe..."Atticus Finch"

Seems like I'm going to be a bit too busy to get any TKMB-reading done any time soon, as I have an exam on friday.

Jordan doesn't seem like the most respected author among Martin or Erikson-fans, to say the least. Probably have to take this somewhere else though.
