LotR: Still not top grossing...

100 Top Grossing movies of all time!

RotK is 6th, TTT is 9th, and FotR is 14th

Titanic is the top grossing film of all time.
Starwars: A New Hope is 2nd
Followed by E.T. (3rd), Star Wars: TPM (4th) and Spider-man (5th)

and the Passion of the Christ is already at 7th (and top film based on fact)

However, RotK still has time to rise...

*snip*
(A note, the top film based on fact is Saving Private Ryan, only at 45th)
Uhhh....

(And of course many of us view that The Passion is based on fact as well )

But anyway, interesting info there.

Re: Re: LotR: Still not top grossing...

i'd say there's just as much fact (and lack of it) in 'saving private ryan' as there is in 'titanic' (or 'the passion' for that matter )

they are all 'dramatic representations of an event that may or may not have happened as depicted'

Still, having the three parts of LoTR all in the top 10 is no mean feat.

And a combined worldwide gross of almost 3 billion dollars.

P.S. It's interesting how many of the top twenty are sci-fi and fantasy films.

Umm...I think the boat -- the really big one, the Titanic...I believe that actually did sink...

(not to belittle The Passion, but Titanic was based on historical events, also, even though the storyline was fictional...)

True on BOTH points! As a 'franchise' it's done QUITE well... especially when you consider it was all filmed in one shot, which kept expenses lower than gathering everyone three times to shoot the three movies.

(EDIT: and THEN add in all the $$ for dvds, EEdvds, action figures and other toys and merchandise... SHEESH! Oodles of $$'es!)

Also interesting point about the sci-fi / fantasy... for so long, Hollywood was afraid to touch them or take them seriously.

Are these money figures adjusted for inflation?
