We'll do our best. What do you want to know? 'Everything' occupies about twenty volumes total, some of which I haven't read, so any more specific requests for knowledge would be helpful.

Welcome to the Moot!

This thread is probably in the wrong forum, but if we hang around and wait some mod will move it to the appropriate one.

If you really want to know about THE Lord of the Rings - then I should head over to the book forum. That is where you will gain a lot of information on Lord of the Rings. Here you can gain a lot too - but it will be poisoned by the film information. The books are a thousand times better and Jackson came no where close to bringing them to the screen. I hope you enjoy the books.

Question- did you first watch the movies and they inspired you to read the books, if so you will be the "second" person JD has heard about that has watched the movies then read the books.

I happen to like the movies MUCH more than JD, but I DEFINITELY agree that you need to start with the books. By all means, if you can make the time available, try to finish up the trilogy before seeing the third movie! Most first-time readers go no farther, but I'd also suggest at least Appendix A - LOTS of valuable information there (once you finish the story).

Meanwhile, you'll probably be told to introduce yourself in the "Welcome New Members" thread in "General Messages" forum, and then this thread will get closed.

Uh-oh... do I hear the footsteps of doom aproaching even now...???

Actually, I'd dissagree with both of them, and say that the place where you'll probably find the most useful stuff is in the 'middle earth' forum. That's the place for discussing the world and the things in it, rather than simply the books or movies. That seems to be what you would be looking for. :P

The books are excellent! I recommend starting with The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

You might want to go to these threads in the General Messages forum:
The Official Welcome Thread - Newbies introduce yourselves here
All members familiarize yourselves: ENTMOOT RULES

Feel free to start a thread about any question you might have, whether it's about Middle-earth in general, specifically Lord of the Rings, or the movies.

Cheers, Nurv

I was just referring to the book forums in general as opposed to the movie forum. That includes the Silmarillion, the Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings forum AND the Middle-earth forum. [Edit: on rereading my post I guess I didn't make that too clear]

Thandruil - I don't deny that the movies inspired some people to read the books, that is not what I had said. I was saying to BB that you can not go by the sale of the books, as to the increase in new readers to Tolkien. After the movies came out - I bought FIVE new editions for myself and I bought a boxed set for my cousin who has yet to read them.

On the other hand, I've loaned my one set to a half dozen people. Three have read it all, one read Hobbit and FotR, one read just Hobbit - and I've got The Hobbit out to someone else now...

And I was talking about the actual books... I think it's good to start with reading the actual material before snooping around too much and finding out too many things before you get there in the books.

I just discovered how much the trilogy costs!!!
Man, I got the Hobbit from a friend for my birthday, and The Fellowship of the Ring from the library.
I wanted to buy all of them at a book store but it costs like way to much.

Yeah, I think it would be really interesting to hear it from the "other way round"

Welcome, Smeagol's sixth chum. Is it too late to put it on your christmas list? If not, libraries are great places: they let you borrow books and you don't even have to pay (unless you decide to keep 'em)

Hope you have fun. But beware of spoilers if you haven't read the books and want to keep some sort of surprise...

I don't know if I could have said it any better myself. I will add that the search feature in the upper right-hand corner is a very useful tool to see if a thread is redundant. Check it out before starting a new thread because we close redundant threads.

If you have any kind of questions, feel free to drop me or any of the other admins or mods a PM. I also respond to e-mails and instant messages.

I'm going to close this thread now since we have the official newbie welcome thread in General Messages. Happy 'mooting!
