I believe my first was a circa 1966 ballantine paperback edition. I just keep giving them away and then getting new ones when I wanted to read it again.

1. I used to have an edition with the baksi black riders on the cover (that being the first one).

Having read that to threads I bought:

2. I bought a Unwin one with the Black Tower of Sauron on the cover.

3. I also have a hardback edition which dustcover had a picture of Gandalf (it is illustrated).

4. And finally I bought a completely new paperback Unwin one-volume with a picture of Gandalf on the cover.

Sorry, since I don't have the books by my computer I can't give the exact years.
