They were all nimrods.
Hurin defied Morgoth to his face and Morgoth cursed his family. He retrieved the Nauglamir from Nargothrond and gave it to Thingol, but that wasn't a cursed piece of jewelry. It would have been a fine gift had Thingol not got it into his muddled head to have the Silmaril mounted in it. Got himself and his grandson killed over it, but on the plus side Luthien was HOTT while wearing it.

Long story short, none of the things that happened were Hurin's fault. He was a great hero. His son let him down but a lot of that was Morgoth's doing, too.

How does one go 30 years between Silmarillion readings? I can't go a week without reading or listening to some part of it. I admire your self control.

It was actually quite comical, IMO, until the dope decided to fall into a ravine.

I think it was quite cruel and uncalled for, actually.

LEAVE GILDOR ALONE!!!! *hugs Gildor* He's my favorite Elf in LotR.

You can do whatever you like to the other one.

Stay away from them, you nasty Nazgúl.

Gildor is actually the reason why I sort of dislike all Elves. I hated Gildor on my first LOTR reading and still dislike him (though now I understand his reasons better). After reading Silm, I have mellowed towards Elves in general, but there are some LOTR ones that I still can't stand.

And... Did I mention Galadriel? Now making her play Saeros would be fun.
I remember I read a fanfic where Khamul took Lorien and had Galadriel's head shaved... A balm to my nazgul heart

Yeah, well it struck me as derivative, chaotic, self-important and poorly written. And most of the characters were complete nimrods. Quite a bit of that I blame on the edit, of course. Most of us wouldn't benefit from having our random jottings and rough sketches codified. So, although I dutifully plow through the new ones as they arrive, and occasionally check back on a segment that appeals to me, my sins haven't been great enough that I felt the need to do the whole thing again.

My definition of 'great hero' doesn't overlap with medieval romance a lot. It's probably a style issue.

I know. I'm a complete apostate. I prefer 'strict constructionist',myself.

Owww!

Well, maybe not. I'll let her be.

It is a matter of taste, though. I think The Silmarillion is one of those books you either love, or it's torture to get through. I consider myself lucky to be among the former.

I am sincerely touched by your restraint. Thanks.

Much of what interests me in the material has to do with specifically literary issues, and I find those subsumed by the emotional connections people make, which is great. Literature should move us, and this does.
