The Last Samurai
I saw this opening night and this is a brilliant film. I was really impressed with the quality, acting, scenery, story, everything!! It follows the samurai culture and shows there lifestyle along with the problems they face with the modernization of Japan. Tom Cruise is excellent along with the Scottish fellow. (forgot name) Superb battles. And a gripping story line.

 i cannot wait to see this film, just a question from the trailer, was the person getting there hair cut off the Archer with the golden armour?... i cant wait to see Ken Watanabe's character he looks incredible, got the coolest armour aswell. Hiroyuki Sanada apparently nearly ****ed Tom Cruise up when he went to hit him because some fault with the mechanical horse, but he managed to pull the sword back... Cant wait for the boken fight

I was going to see it on Friday with Ben, but the snow kind of ruined our plans. Hopefully I'll see it next week, but it looks doubtful with all the stuff I have to do.

I absolutely love this movie! It made me cry, and it was beautifully filmed. It was surprisingly good, considering the random white-guy insertion.
The only two points that annoyed me were: 1. The completely western romance between Taka (Katsumoto's sister) and Algren (Cruise's character). 2.
I cried when Katsumoto's son was killed. That was so sad! (Shame upon shame, I can't remember his name. I want to say Harotada.) Super amazing movie!

I wasn't really intrested in the movie itself at first. It was too, Tom Cruisey for my taste. But, beinga practicioner of a sword art myself, I went to see it to see how good of a job they did with the fighting, and I thought it was amazing. Not only the fighting but the film as a whole. I was really surprised since I went in thinking that I wouldn't like it at all.

Saw it tonight. I can't say I'm all that impressed, despite (or because of?) my usual affinity to historical battle flicks. I'll avoid saying historical "epic" because that it wasn't. It was a good film, mind you - well made, well produced, and I quite enjoyed all the scenes where Algren and Katsumoto interact - but at the end of the day it felt a bit too conventional and forgettable. I don't think it was a bad movie by any means, but I likely won't see it a second time, nor will I be singing its praises years from now.

Question for all: What is Katsumoto's son's name? Argh! (He's the brave archer who dies on the bridge when some of the samurai and Algren free Katsumoto.)
Edit: Found it, good ol' Google. He was Nobutada, played by Shin Koyamada.

no he shouldnt have killed himself, it isnt obvious why but if you think about it you can put little things together... one thing Tom Cruise redeemed himself by fighting for something worthwhile there was no reason to kill himself he had made up for his mistakes, Katsumoto was in a different position he knew he was going to die but to go out with honor he would do it himself... If Tom Cruise went through the battle unscathed i would call it a flaw but he was shot many times and he truly did get ****ed up...
hmmm i dont see the odds of her falling in love with him to slim, he lived with her, i think Katsumoto telling Taka that her husband was trying to kill him made her feel a bit less resentful to Algren, not to mention that there is no huge romance in the movie, i think she does like him but she is denying it and her only show of it was by saying it would bring her family honor if he wore the armour... oooooh i cant wait to see Ujio **** Algren up again

I liked the movie on the whole. What I didn't like however was how the Emperor renounced the friendship with America and finally saw Katsumoto's point of view - AFTER he'd had them all eradicated! Gee thanks, Emps! Very crass in my oppinion. The scene was portrayed in such a way that we the audience (I felt) were supposed to be sympathetic in some way with the Emperor (and what a plonker he was), or were expected to forgive what he did seeing as he'd finally seen the error of his ways and all. It was far too late for that...
Or have I just misunderstood? It WAS very late... Also, if Algren wasn't expected to kill himself after the battle, then doesn't that suggest that he wasn't a true samurai..? And if that was the case he shouldn't really have been abasing himself in front of the Emperor at the end, should he..?

I loved it. It had a great story, great fight scenes, just about everything was great about it. Even Tom Cruise was good. I thought it was a little unrealistic that Tom Cruise survives the battle.

I agree FoT. Absolutely everyone dies except, big surprise, the main character! (Except Graham, who wasn't actually in the battle.) Despite the fact that he was severely wounded, and a great soldier, it was all too convenient.
As for the Western romance, that's exactly what it was. It also seemed out of place. Fortunately, they didn't focus on it very much, so it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the movie - just its authenticity.

A Western romance is a cultural reference - how people would fall in love, court, etc. in a Western (ie. European or North American) way.
In Japan, their culture is different, so their romances are completely different. This is difficult to explain. I hope I'm making sense.
