Curufinwë Fëanáro sounds pretty cool, but there's a lot like that. I love the way Quenya sounds.

I like the name Felagund, which is Dwarvish, but I think it is cause he is my favorite character. I wouldn't name a kid that or anything. One of the prettiest names in the books is Laurelin. That is my nieces name. Even people that have never read the books love her name. Some do not realize that it is all one name and mistake her name for being Laura Lynn.

Re:

I agree with Inoldonil, we can find many good names in Tolkien’s work; Voronwe is a good example and Glorfindel is another.

Fingolfin sounds cool, as does Elwe Singollo and Elu Thingol.

Elanor is a beautiful name, I think. Other cool ones are: Tinuviel, Alatariel, Elendil, Yavanna, Celebrimbor.

second thought

after thinking about it, there are many names that sound pretty cool

for humans i'd have to say imrahil, elendil, and eldarion

and i'd add say the three G's for me

Gildor Inglorion, Glorfindel, and Gil-Galad

BUT there TOO many great names especially if you go through the appendix and lineages

Eru Iluvatar

Finduilas - beautiful name too

Annuminas

I liked the old name Angamandi more than Angband, ditto for Nienori/Nienor

Faramir (like the sound of it) Faramir, Faramir, Faramir (see what I mean?)

Tar-Minyatos or something, in fact, all the Tars.

Romandacil

Helm Hammerhand, Eorl the Young

Cirith Ungol

Telperion & Laurelin

Arda

Minas Morgul (reeks of rogue)

Ecthelion

Arwen Undomiel

Beren Ermabwed (must have Ermabwed behind)

But the best of all............................

Tar-Minyatur 'First-ruler' is probably the 'Tar' name your thinking of Selwythe.

Is 'Ermabwed' an earlier form of 'Erchamion'?

Elros Tar-Minyatur !! It does have a grand sound to it, really royal !!

Tilwelint (Tolkien's old name for Thingol)

Eol is simple and elegant.

And for place-names:
-Tur Haretha, the Ladybarrow. It has a Xena-ish feeling to it, yes?

And my favourite word is gorgun, what the Wild Men of Druadan call the Orcs, and also the Entish word burarum.

You know, it does have a 'Xenaish' feel to it, though I can't explain it. I think perhaps it is it's relation to a place and people that had amazons in their midst.

Well, I love Entish names. Real names, not the ones like Treebeard or something. So, my choice is Fimbretile (I'm not sure if the spelling is correct, though).

Ahab, is that you?

Legolas, you mean Sindarin names. Fangorn, Bregalad, Fimbrethil, these are all Sindarin.

I think Mithrandir has a noble and beautiful sound to it. None of the other Istari can match it. Saruman sounds like his soul in later days; rather disgusting. Radagast, well... Not really nice. Pallando and Alatar makes me think of blue clowns.

Kirinki, the Elvish names for Saruman were Curumo and CurunÃ*r, what about those? The names of Alatar and Pallando were later changed to (or at any rate replaced by) Morinehtar and Romenstámo (or Rome(n)star).

Tolkien also intended to changed 'Haldad' -- to 'Halbar'. Do you like that as much easterlinge?

'Halbar'..... ugh.......

Why am I reminded of a fish?

Let's stick to Haldad and Marach (and Beor, though I don't really like the name), nice archaic-saga-like pre-Elven contact names for the Edainic Fathers. Beren is pretty good, and so is Tuor.

I think sometimes Tolkien went a little too far tweaking his Middle-Earth. And he never got around to rewriting the Fall of Gondolin thing.

.......I nearly forgot Ghan-buri-Ghan !!! Nice primitive-wearing-grass-skirts feel to that name.

"Wild Men kill gorgun and wear grass skirt every day. Wild Men beat Horse-Lords at Math, hooo hooo heee eh heeee!! Wild Men beat drum and invent Morse Code, better than Stone House People with silly fire on hills. Watch Wild Men dance hula around stupid gorgun."

Not very appealing any of them, I must confess. As for geographical names I always liked Nan Curunir, though.
