Recent Suite101 Tolkien articles

Sorry for being absent for so long. That just seems to be the way my life is going right now. But I HAVE been trying to keep the Suite101 articles rolling.

Trick or treat? Spooky Middle-earth
J.R.R. Tolkien brushed most of the major Western holidays with his imaginary history. It's a shame he passed over Halloween. Or did he?

The Middle-earth Prophecies
An examination of the role prophecy plays in Middle-earth, and how Tolkien distinguishes between true foretelling and forecasting, and how prophecy may be a tool for compulsion.

The Sauron Strategies: One war to win them all, except...
The second of two essays examining the strategies Sauron employed during the Second and Third Ages. Striving to be like Morgoth, Sauron took on the world. Perhaps he bit off more than he could chew.

The Sauron Strategies: Footsteps into failure
The first of two articles examining Sauron's strategies and objectives. In the Second Age, Sauron proved to be flexible and resilient, but he consistently underestimated his enemies' abilities and resources.

Riding in carts with Hobbits
Tolkien's Hobbits bear some striking resemblances to the pre-Romanic Celts who spread across ancient Europe.

All the king's horses and all the king's men...
This is the third in a series of articles exploring previously unpublished texts about Middle-earth. The 'Osanwe-kenta' text is closely identified with J.R.R. Tolkien's 'Orcs' essay and 'Quendi and Eldar'. But there may also be a connection with the much later 'Shibboleth of Feanor'.

The prophesy article is fascinating, and helps to clarify very difficult issues, which have been discussed on the Moot recently.

I liked the Halloween article. I've heard too many accounts of the origin of Halloween, now. It was interesting. Now, how about St. Patrick's Day? Oh, it seems you've already written that article! Here's a small excerpt for those who haven't read it yet:
Quote:
The green-wearing Rangers were met with scorn, -- especially, it seems -- in times corresponding pretty closely to March 17th in our reckoning. Indeed it seems clear from Osanwe-Kenta (which jumps all over the place in it's musings) that pinching was a common harassment Aragorn's men had to endure in Bree, especially from it's younger inhabitants ...
It's called Look what they've done to my clovers, ma!
