Yet another post in EU's stupid questions category

Finally was able to download ICQ. One problem, though. I cannot make it register--it just makes my computer freeze up. Anyone else out there familiar with this new version of ICQ? I don't know what to make of it and since I can't get into ICQ, I can't ask the question in a more appropriate setting.

Also, are there any know pieces of software that do cause this sort of conflict? I can only assume that this is the problem.

It does always seem to be something, doesn't it?

NOOOO!!! You got the blasphemic MESS known as ICQ 2000! I pity you, I pity you indeed... you should have gotten ICQ 99 off me instead...

Re: Yet another post in EU's stupid questions category

That would be fine, but there was a note on the page where I downloaded the program to the effect that there was no available tech support for beta versions. I don't suppose there are other versions available that might be slightly older but not beta? I am told that betas are prone to be unstable anyway.

But thanks, Fat Middle, I will give that a try anyway. Perhaps they will take pity on me.

That would be fine, IP, I am game. How do I do it? I am willing to try anything, because so far, 2000 sucks!

ICQ does stoopid things to useless paperweights like ours, EU
May I suggest AIM, I never have trouble with it

Re: Yet another post in EU's stupid questions category

I got outvoted in our household on adding any AOL software to our computer, so I am afraid that I can't oblige with AIM. And I do see the concern here, we had such a devil of a time getting all the AOL stuff out the last time we used them. I guess our computer didn't care much for AOL

Um, ICQ is a Mirabilis product, and Mirabilis is an AOL company... so it's damned if you do, damned if you don't...

Unless you never go online keepign aol stuff off your comp is almost impossible. AIM is fine though, there's maybe a big add that pops up once a month that you can just close and forget about, and believe me, they won't screw you.

Re: Yet another post in EU's stupid questions category

Well, perhaps I will try it on the sly. I can always try to hide it somewhere where my other half won't come across it.

Ok, I just bit the bullet and installed AIM. And the crowd goes wild!

That was pretty painless, so far, hahaha

Re: Yet another post in EU's stupid questions category

You already know now, Anduin, but for anyone else who might like a chat, you can find me by the same nick in AIM. I will look for you guys there. Don't be shy about a page. Hehehehe, if my husband is online again and you page him by mistake (that was hilarious, Anduin, and many thanks--the look of puzzlement on his face was just priceless!
:rollin:  ), he'll just shout for me to come and answer or if he is busy, he'll just say that it isn't me, but he'll pass the message along.
So far it seems pretty neat, but still need to familiarize myself with some of the features. Knowledge is good.

See ya in AIM

Cool. When I can access AIM again next week I'll add you to my buddy list. Just a tip: when you're done with the computer you might want to sign off your screen-name or put it into "away mode" so there's no confusion

yeah, I had just forgotten to do it, since I am still not used to AIM being there and coming up on its own. I need to change the settings

Ok, after some further fiddling around, I have gotten rid of ICQ2000 and have found a 99 download, which installed without the first murmur of discontent (go figure ).

For the record I now have ICQ, up and running. For those who use ICQ and might want to chat with one contrary unicorn, I am #82739769

Have a nice day

Re: re

This might not be the right place to ask, but, where can I get ICQ? I have tought about it for a while and have not decided yet, could you tell me why I should get it?

Re: re

You can get it at www.icq.com

It's a great tool for communicating with online friends, and RL friends too if they have an account. Talking with people on a message board is one thing, but real-time chats on ICQ or AIM bring much more depth to a friendship.
