I do. So far I've written only Harry Potter fan-fiction, though.

If you count Entmoot and Atharon RPGs, yeah, I write fanfiction. But nothing besides that.

I just prefer making up my own worlds, with their own customs, languages, etc.

Fan Fiction? This may seem dumb on my part, but is that Fantasy Fiction?

It's any fiction set in an existing fiction world, usually one with movies or (a) book(s), and typically involving main characters. For example: you could write Fan Fiction about Star Wars if you were telling the continued story of Luke Skywalker after Episode VI. Another example of Fan Fiction would be writing M:I 4. At least, I don't think it has to be fantasy.

But most Fan Fiction is fantasy, and it's usually LOTR too...and often involves Legolas...

Isn't there a fan-fiction section on tolkientrail? I remember reading some there.

I've been working on my own original stuff quite a bit, but I'd really like to re-read The Silmarillion and write some fanfics about those characters. There's just so much potential! (But I'm hella busy with school/work so it probably won't happen anytime soon.)

The Silmarillion is indeed rife with fanfic-opportunity, moreso than The Hobbit or LoTR in that respect. The only downside is that you have to remember a lot of history if you want to play in that sandbox. I've never have spent as much time in the timelines for discussion than I did for fanfic and RPG-reasons.

I made a feeble attempt at a fan-fic based in the 1st Age a number of years ago. The main character has been my only attempt at writing an elf, and my 1st at writing a woman. Only got a short ways into it, and provided a vague outline, but I used the character in some RPs based in the late 2nd and in the 3rd age. Her demise came in an RP in the years before the war. The advantage of writing an immortal character!

The Sil is quite a big sandbox, and it is a bit daunting trying to keep everything in mind while creating the sub-tale fanfics.

Indeed, not too many fandoms that offer that particular benefit.

This is mostly why I love to use the world when writing fanfic but try to use as little of the canon characters as I can, or use those that aren't well defined. Lots of those in the Sil too.
