Re: Follow up questions about Multiculturalism!

Greg, the ballot is private (sorta) so who's to say someone might not vote for you and support HOBBIT?

Anywho, I really think we deserve the vote. I don't even get Ben's biased option in the poll, how are we more biased then anyone else?

before i email my vote -

a few more questions...

1- do you recognize the existence of the Bajoran Culture?

2- is Aragorn claustrophobic? support your answer (gods, i sound like a teacher!)

3- describe your theory on Tom Bombadil

4- if you had a choice, which would you rather have as a pet - Oliphaunt, Cat of Queen Beruthiel, Valaruka, or Warg?

5- <monty python> WHAT is your name? WHAT is your favorite color? WHAT is hte airspeed velocity of a laden swallow?

note: these won't really affect my vote. (i think) i already know who i'm voting for.

Re: before i email my vote -

1- do you recognize the existence of the Bajoran Culture?

Yes. This rarely comes up in the Southfarthing, however.

2- is Aragorn claustrophobic? support your answer (gods, i sound like a teacher!)

Aragorn passed twice through Moria and then through the Paths of the Dead. If he suffered claustrophobia, he certainly mastered it. I do not think he was afraid of the close dark spaces. I think rather he was afraid for Gandalf, and not for himself, especially.

3- describe your theory on Tom Bombadil

Tom Bombadil is considered by the Tolkien scholars to be an "enigma character" and they have largely given up on actually understanding him, thinking he is not meant to be understood. My theory is that enigmas are meant to be solved and so there is a solution to Bombadil. He was "first and fatherless." (He had no belly button!) I think that Tolkien has presented us with a vision of Adam unfallen. This is what Adam might have been like if he had not fallen into sin and lived long ages instead. Childlike wonder and innocence combined with age old wisdom and over whom dark powers had no hold. I like this idea especially because of the Christian background I share with the Professor.

4- if you had a choice, which would you rather have as a pet - Oliphaunt, Cat of Queen Beruthiel, Valaruka, or Warg?

I assume I must choose, so I guess the Oliphaunt!

5- <monty python> WHAT is your name? WHAT is your favorite color? WHAT is hte airspeed velocity of a laden swallow?

My name is Gilthalion.

My favorite color is blue.

What kind of sparrow? African or

Re: before i email my vote -

Tolkien insisted that LOTR was not allegory, that he detested allegory itself and would never use it. Asside from the fact that his books (as well as your Bombadil answer, Gil ) contradict this, why was he so friendly with and why did he take literary advice from CS Lewis, a man who was absolutely in love with allegory?

Re: before i email my vote -

there are few ways to find out my vote...

- hack into Yahoo (actually this was done just recently...)

- hack into wherever they keep copies of all our email looking for subversive/radical thoughts

- pay off HOBBIT to look over Ben's shoulder while he's counting the votes, & get him to tell

- convince Ben to end his peaceful rule of Entmoot, set up HOBBIT as a dictator, & have Ben publish the list of all who didn't vote for HOBBIT & have them unjustly banned from ENTMOOT for alleged treason (well, this way you'll know whether i voted for HOBBIT or not...)

or, you could just trick me into telling...

ANTICIPATION !!!

I don't know whether I'm more anxious about the US Presidential Election or about the Entmoot Presidential Election!

Actually, I'm expecting Bush to win in a blowout landslide.

I have no idea how the ENTMOOT election will go!

TURNOUT AND VOTE!

(And vote GILTHALION!)

Gilthalion...

"i'm expecting Bush to win in a blowout landslide"...
right now i'd just settle for knowing WHO WON!

"i told people to write my name on the real ballot"...
the reckless impulsive side of me WAS tempted...

"i hope you voted for me!"...
hoom hum - there's already enough parallels between the ENTMOOT election & the US one...

Re: ANTICIPATION !!!

X...."out of the mouths of babes" is just a saying. I changed it to adults because I do know how old you are. I said it in reaction to your statement that "1 vote dosen't make the difference."

Re: ANTICIPATION !!!

Yep! The landslide prediction was a little off...

News reports of depressed african-american turnout were greatly exaggerated.

News reports of record-breaking conservative turnout were also out of line.

The polls (except Zogby) stopped before the drunk driving mud hit the fan.

Al Gore campaigned harder.

(sigh)

I could come up with a lot of other excuses. But clearly, the nation has almost entirely realigned, with major urban centers controlling electoral outcomes in more states.

It's the City vs the Country and the Country is losing.

Within a generation, Mordor will prevail and the Shire will be a revised story of the past.
