For or Against?

How does everyone think the movie The Hobbit will turn out? I heard a lot of people saying that it is going to be a failure, and nothing compared to the book.. So what do you guys think?

Well I think individual expectations (at least) depend in some measure upon whether or not one is for Jackson's The Lord of the Rings, especially if he becomes the director (if it is not already confirmed that is).

I always thought that The Hobbit was going to be 'enough' like Jackson's Lord of the Rings no matter who directed it, because Jackson's beast is still too big to be ignored by those who have no reason to ignore it -- I mean, there's no arguing it didn't make a lot of money and win awards, regardless of opinions of how faithful or unfaithful an adaptation it is. I guess it's quite possible that someone would put up a ton of money to back a director who intended to wholly disregard Jackson's The Lord of the Rings, but I think it's unlikely, at this point anyway.

For myself I don't like Jackson's style of making films (my opinion here includes King Kong). I don't agree with him concerning what he (apparently) thinks is good filmmaking -- and I think he and his writing team all too often put their own ideas of what is 'good', or their own ideas concerning what audiences today will or will not accept, over Tolkien's tale and its spirit and tone.

So while anything is possible, do I generally expect to like these Hobbit films? No.

I'm sure plenty of people expect to like or love them however, because they like or love what Jackson has already done.

Also looking forward to it. What Tolkien fan wouldn't be?

Yep. That got me sitting bolt upright, too. Mayhaps he'll be true to the book in the first, and lay in all the crap in the second. I'd definitely see the first, maybe rent, or better yet, borrow the second, just out of curiosity.

You took the words right from my mouth, Gray.

What do you all feel about it being filmed in 3D?

Also, on a side note, I like how he has all the original actors...
but who is this Itaril lady???

http://the-hobbit-movie.com/2011/01/...o-play-itaril/

Is he seriously making things up as he goes?
A little concerned...

Welcome to Entmoot, Mrs Foxx!

Wow! That Itaril thing is interesting - and a major departure. It DOES inject a female role though.

I wonder if she'll aid in the Dwarves' escape, and join them for the rest of their adventure - until maybe helping Bilbo (and going with him) to the encampment of the armies of Men and Elves.

And I wonder if the 'Elven Lord' she falls for will be played by Orlando Bloom.

Concerning Itaril - this has not been confirmed, has it? I know there are a dozen or so rumors floating around all the film gossip sites about Saorise Ronan playing a female elf warrior(/wench) but as far as I thought they were just rumors. Hopefully, it won't actually come to fruition.

As for turning The Hobbit into two films, I am reserving judgement until I see them. A lot of material will be added (pretty safe bet that the White Council will be included) which may work or may not.

I loved the LotR trilogy, but I do worry a tad that The Hobbit is getting a little too... overdone? Not quite the word I'm looking for, but hopefully you see what I mean.

I saw a documentary about 3D movies the other day, and apparently it’s Hollywood’s best defence against piracy, because if someone tries to record a 3D movie in the theatre it will become blurry. So if this is the case I’m fine with them filming The Hobbit in 3D.

I expect there will be a non-3D option as well - like with Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

Maybe where you are. Just about every bloody thing here is available in 3D (we have IMAX and gold class cinemas that show 3D).

Yeah - all that movie money that's been pumped into New Zealand, I suppose.
