Astronomy question

My knowledge of astronomy is quite weak.

If we reside with the Milky Way, how are we able to obtain pictures of it from the seemly from the outside.

Well, not from the outside, but since our position is close to the exterior side of one of the arms of the Galaxy we can have a reasonable view of most of the Galaxy.

Isn't what we refer to as the milky way just the cross section we can see from earth?
