When I see FinGOLFin I think of 7-irons (and other funny name associations)

I have this terrible problem - whenever I see the name "Fingolfin" (whose character I love, BTW), immediately this very unwelcome image pops into my head of the lordly High King of the Noldor, dressed in golfing knickers and cap, chipping out of the light rough to the left of the fairway somewhere on the back nine in the British Open! Why an elf would be in the rough, I don't know - probably Sauron doctored his ball!

Also, Aragorn is a nice name, but Arathorn, his daddy - ugh! Makes me think Aragorn's grandfather is AraPricklyBramble (plant theme) or AraPaperCut (sharp theme).

But worst of all, my beloved (Entmoot) husband's name, Huor, reminds me of someone ... umm... throwing up! (*groan* "I KNEW those oysters CÃ*rdan sent from the Havens smelled funny! uh-oh ... HUOR!)

Any other funny name associations for anyone out there?

Now really, you missed an easy one. LEGOlas! When I was eight and first reading the series, that name always made me think of little plastic building blocks.

Then there's Celeborn, aka Teleporno... poor guy.

Last year, when we were studying Norse mythology in school, me and my friend kept calling Valinor "Valhalla", and vice versa. Which isn't so much funny as disturbing... this is the effect that school has on us.

The name "Boffin" reminds me of the word "Bopping". Before you know it, "Little Bunny Foo-Foo" pops into my head. "Little Bunny Foo-foo, hopping through the forest, scooping up the field mice and bopping them on the head...." (This is a classic preschool school, for those of you who aren't acquainted with it. An irritating one.)

Also, Gollum reminds me of the golem from Jewish folklore. For this reason, whenever I picture Gollum, he looks rather thin and goopy, quite possibly made of clay.

That Bunny Foo-Foo song still cracks me up! ("hare today, goon tomorrow!")

Poor Celeborn - to have a name like that AND be overshadowed by your beautiful wife! (is that why he didn't catch the ship with her when she left M.E.?)

The Legolas/Lego thing bugged me, too - before the movie came out, I always used to pronounce it with the accent on "GO" (leGOlas) so I wouldn't constantly be thinking of Legos. But the language people for the movie seemed to be very good, so I've switched to LEgolas.

I too tried pronouncing it LeGOlas a few times, but just it sounded wrong.

Aha! Fans of "Little Bunny Foofoo" unite!!! It is a fun song... I tried to teach it to my little cousin once; I think my aunt was a bit disturbed; it's such a *violent* song!

"Legolas" always reminds me of "leg-less". The only other one is Finrod which reminds me of a rather rude anatomic reference.
Sorry. Us Mordorians are soooooooo bad.

elrond-enron

pippin-pipkin (watership down)

bilbo-little bo peep...

gandalf-gandorf (this is from the legend of zelda, a link to the past and actually it works better the other way around)

in fact, how about including names that remind you of middle earth?

and for the LONGEST time, he though Merry was a girl, because he didn't see the word, he just heard "Mary"! He was shocked the first time Merry was referred to as "he"

Not from LoTR, but from the Silmarillion - why oh why did Tolkien name that lovely green hill on which the elven city of Tirion was built - TUNA! I always think of lots of smelly, oily empty tuna cans laying around - hardly an elvish image

Now that I think about it, when I was younger, I mistook Merry for a girl too.

I had the same exact vision. I tried to get rid of it by trying to pronounce tuna different ways. Doesn't work.

For example

Dhuuna (dh = th)

still sounds funny

Does everyone else on this thread now have that horrible image of Fingolfin in knickers and cap in their brain? (MWA-HA-HA!) Or is that too stupid for anyone but me?

The hill Tuna reminds me of fish - icky.

I thought that the bad guy from The Legend of Zelda was called Ganon or Ganondorf - reminds me of Gandalf too.

The place Forodwraith (did I spell that right?) makes me think of Frodowraith.

I used to pronouce Legolas as LEGOL - las. But the way they say it in the movie sounds better.

I used to think that Merry was a girl when I was little.
Sorry about this, but what about Bilbo? He should be eternally grateful (sp?) that Tolkien liked B more than D. Again, sorry for bringing that up but I thought it should be said. That's what all the uncultured, movie-watching people in my school think.
