Actually I love The Hobbit. It is what got me started with Tolkein and I keep going back to it for an insight into what makes Hobbits tick. It's also a refreshing and relaxing book for me to read when all the worlds troubles are heming me in.

Read on.

I Love The Hobbit. Mostly because it's a hilarious book (it's the only Tolkien book that makes me laugh out loud), but also because the writing style is so light-hearted and quirky.

It's also really fun to read aloud, especially when no one else is around.

Fascinating.

Hmmm, one thing is for sure and that is that I do not like the Hobbit as much as LotR. It is not that I don't like the Hobbit, but I just prefer LotR. It's more grown up and more my style. I didn't enjoy the Hobbit that much. Don't know why.

i feel the same way. The Hobbit is a good book, but with LotR trhere is so much more going on that every time i read it i find something new that i missed before. I dont get as much of that when reading the Hobbit

I agree with Gollum and Lalaith. While I enjoyed The Hobbit, I didn't get as much out of it as I did with The Lord of the Rings.

I really enjoyed reading "The Hobbit", it was very different from anything else I had ever read.

The Lord of the Rings was much better, but ooh I love The Hobbit! The thing is that it is much more light-hearted, and for the most part all of the characters are actually happy. You don't get that all too much in the Lord of the Rings, so although I love LOTR much more, The Hobbit is also in my opinion wonderful and I read it whenever I'm feelin down. Hey...that got a Beatle song stuck in my head. Cool.

I like the Hobbit because I could actually enjoy it. With the LOTR trilogy I was like Omygosh Whats gonna Happen to them? But w/ the hobbit it was a more happy book.(I don't know if killing dragons and fighting elves dwarves and goblins all at one time is considered a happy time, but oh well)

Yeah, LOTR is much better. (I think there is a thread like that too...) The Hobbit is just not as intersting, and you don't have time to know most of the characters 'cause it's short too.

I love lotr, but hobbit is the best! the writing style is vastly entertaining and bilbo is so funny! i also love the fact that the elve king of mirkwood has a flaw!gems! so elves arent perfect after all. and radagahst was invented in the hobbit!

I'm not intending to argue, but just want to try to clarify what I think you mean by this. I think the characters in The Hobbit are equally as unhappy most of the time in the story as those in LotR are. I think the difference is that the quest undertaken in TH is optional; thus, they could all just forget it at any time, technically. Because of this, the reader feels a safe haven of sorts, whereas in LotR it's literally do or die. There will be no rich reward, and failure will be total failure.
The Hobbit has plenty of tense and richly somber moments, but we can always sense that light at the end of the tunnel (hey, get it? :P). I think that's what you mean when you say they are happy (besides the amount of humor in it, and the humor being more silly and overt than LotR).

I will never get sick of re-reading LotR but I have read The Hobbit twice and that's enough for me for some years.
