I don't believe the horse is shadowfax as gandalf took shadowfax not long before the time of LotR, and hobbit is set about 50/60 years prior-hence (someone correct me if I am wrong! )

I think This part of the chapter is absolutely hilarious, and shows how funny tolkien's writings could be
