Thanks for the pronunciation notes (you would know better than anyone else here, I imagine!) - does that name mean anything that you know of? I guess the "el" gets dropped in the English pronunciation. Would you pronounce the "el" distinctly, or just kind of blur it into the next syllable?

Yes the name means "the goodness of religion".
And "el" would be "blurred into the next syllable", it would be pronounced Salahel Deen.

i saw this movie last night and it was awesome. a great script, great actors, great action scenes. my only complaint wouldve been to put some more of liam neeson because he was so good in this movie (maybe some flashbacks in jerusalem.)

It looks like it could be interesting.... I just hope they don't try to glorify the Crusades. I think its something Christians shouldn't be proud of.

Just saw this film last night - I really enjoyed it. The battle & fight scenes are quite well done; I love swordfights so much. Also, the writing is compelling; all the noble things that get said are a pleasure to hear spoken. Alas, poor Orlando isn't given enough opportunity to speak, IMO; he's got far too many voiceless shots wherein he just "emotes" with that Legolas face... But I didn't mind so much, because it was such a beautiful show. It's very gratifying when the jerks in the movie get what's coming to them.

Saw it. Liked it very much. Well, sorta saw it. I missed the last five-ten minutes. *fumes* I had to go to this dance class and I was running late and had to leave. Only later did I find out it only had about ten minutes to go.
It was up there with Gladiator. Haven't really decided if it's better or worse or the same. The themes in the story were real thought-provoking without actually pushing a particular view, which I liked. The bit about everyone getting
stabbed in the throat
was a little redundant. I was very impressed with Orlando though. He surprised me in Pirates, going from the prissy elf with the "I can feel it" lines to Will's boyish bravado. This man (note: man) he played was totally convincing, I thought. I didn't think he had a heartbroken-widower-trying-to-save-his-soul in him. Everyone else's acting was superb, from Liam to whoever it was that played Saladin.... Yeah, I think it was as good as Gladiator.

Ahhh, Rosie, you gotta go back and see the ending! You'll like how Orlando wraps up his character, I think. I'm going with my boyfriend and see it again; even HE enjoyed it and he's the world's most cynical critic.

Rex, your sarcasm is delicious... love it! I appreciated Bloom's portrayal, for what it was, but I'll have to admit, he still retains most of his boyishness - not yet truly a man, but he's got some growing up to do yet, I suppose.

Lotesse: I would go see it again, but it's my mum's birthday and I'm seriously broke.

Rex: Well... okay, so maybe my 'review' was a little too shiny. Yeah, he's still got a bit of growing up to do. But I didn't think he had any of that in him, and I was surprised to see him do it so well. No, I don't think it's really near Crowe in Gladiator, but it was an excellent start as his first major role.

I finally saw it, and it wasn't as bad as I expected. Nothing was too irritating (can you tell that my expectations were pretty low? ), not even the fact that Orlando Bloom mistakes a sulky expression for character depth. It managed to avoid most of the cliches of Hollywood historical 'epics' - the romance was almost non-existent, the battle scenes weren't too long, and there weren't many glaring modernisms in the script. It didn't even seem too long as a film. Sure, bits of it were rather silly. Bloom's speech before the battle... does no one understand rhetoric any more? You can't get people to go to their deaths by saying 'this is stupid and it doesn't matter who wins, but let's fight anyway'! The eve of battle is not the time for moral complexity - which is really out of place in the time period anyway, since I don't believe a character of his background and education (i.e. none) would have been so ready to question what he had been taught. The religious questions were dealt with in a fairly perfunctory way, and of course the priests are sly and duplicitous - as a Catholic I should be used to that by now from Hollywood. But overall, it was quite inoffensive as a film, and probably well-meaning enough.

It was much better that I expected. And I was actually mildly impressed with Orlando Bloom - he didn't have the same act as in every other movie he has played in.
I loved the part where they pulled the siege towers over!
