Reading it again? Good for you. I'm trying to read it for the first time, but for some reason other things keep popping up to annoy me so I can't read. . .

I'm ashamed to admit I haven't read it, I know. . .
I started it in late November, but I wanted to read LotR before I saw the movie, so I put it aside, and haven't gotten back to it yet, especially as I just started the Silmarillion. Oh well, I'll read it soon!

i think people should read lotr before the hobbit neways..just read prologue in lotr..if someone reads the hobbit first, theyre prolly gonna think the lotr is the same. a story for younger readers and (some) wont even get lotr a chance..but I read the hobbit when i was about 10 and was hooked..i couldnt put down the fotr i had bought for weeks.

I disagree. The hobbit is a good book. Childish book, but good one. It the start of LOTR and this very inportant book on the ring and on Bilbo.

I don't even think "childish" is the right word to describe it. It is an excellent book that deals with some very serious subjects in an engaging and entertaining way. I highly recommend any Tolkein fan who hasn't read it to read it right away, and read it with an eye to appreciating it's story within the entire context of ME, as well as on it's own merits.

Tolkien was not writing in his preferred style. You notice every so often in the hobbit he treads a fine line between the sublime and the ridiculous. Some of the hobbit is ludicrist, but there are parts where the granduer of tolkien's world pokes through.

I don't know. I guess I just enjoy the ridiculous. I think it's an excellent book; I don't really see any problems with it. I enjoy humor and silliness mixed in with adventure. To me, silliness need not be childish. (I don't mean to say it wasn't written as a children's book, but the word "childish" has a negative connotation that I don't think applies. I think it is one of those books that transcends children's literature and is a great book for all ages).

I thoroughly enjoyed The Hobbit. I didn't really pay too much attention to Bilbo's magic ring until I got into Lord of the Rings. The second time I read The Hobbit, there were parts where I was like, "OK, now I get it." It is an excellent prelude to Lord of the Rings, and also an entertaining stand-alone story not just for children, but everyone.

I've just finished re-reading The Hobbit for the third time and it's still a good read. I think the thing which always strikes me the most about it is how easy and simple to read it is compared to LOTR. I love the way it shows us how Bilbo is a home-loving hobbit at heart but who also has this daring streak which leads him to this amazing adventure.
Love it!

I liked the start when Gandalf met Bilbo in the first time. Gandalf looked there as someone that have time to talk with Bilbo and a wizard that doesn't rush to be in some other lands and meet other peple. i liked the way that Bilbo saying it too.

The Hobbit is written for children, but I like it that way.
