Also known as the Dagor Bragollach. This was the fourth battle in the great wars of Beleriand. The breaking of the Siege of Angband. Morgoth sent great fires from Thangorodrim burning Ard-galen and the lower slopes of Dorthonion and Ered Wethrin killing many of the Noldor that were caught on the plain. This included Angrod and Aegnor, the younger sons of Finarfin.

Behind the fire came Morgoth's armies, Orcs, Balrogs, and Glaurung the dragon. Fingolfin and Fingon were driven back to the Ered Wethrin and Finrod was nearly killed defending the pass of Sirion but he was rescued by Barahir.

In the east, Aglor was forced after bitter fighting, but Meadhros called the forces of his House at Himring and reclosed the pass, but then Glaurung overran Lothlann and forced Maglor's Gap and Thargelion and east Beleriand north of the Ramdal were ravaged.

Fingolfin infuriated by the crushing defeat, rode to Angband and challenged Morgoth to single combat. In the end, the High King was slain.

This battle was said to end with the coming of spring.
