New guy curious about the mark on Bilbo Baggins door left by Gandalf

I just started on my quest for completing the four books and I was wondering if anyone knew what the mark on the door looked like or what it meant. I know it "meant" burglar for hire....but someone told me that in the older books, it meant truth and wisdom or something like that. I just wondered if anyone could help me out. Thanks.
