I think Trumpkin is mostly confused - everything is peaceful, so he sees no need for anyone to tell him that nobody's been killed. If he's complaining, it's because they don't speak loud enough for him to hear properly. When he was young, people spoke loud and clear, not like these days ...

Oh, yes... I remember the scene. "Useless? I should say he is!" And then he gets out an ear-horn which seems to be the old-fashioned form of hearing aids... I get the impression it doesn't work very well.

I was always under the impression that we never did tell how well the ear-horn worked because after he used it, the owl only said maybe one more thing and then Trumpkin showed his bad hearing again by speaking really loudly.
Ahh.. I love discussing the deep, important concepts behind Lewis... ear-horns are deeply and intellectually moving.
