I use to be very anti-Gun, but recently I've thought about it more: the outlaws are going to have guns anyways, so why would we take guns away from that man who could save my life?

I believe in controling WHO gets a gun, and added to that I think there ought to be a test that gun buyers pass.

Actually the instant background check does weed out most criminals. Also most states require you to attend an 8 hr. course on handgun safety which includes some range time.

It's better to have 'em and not need 'em than to need 'em and not have 'em.

I don't really think that gun ownership should be controlled (at least not more heavily than now), but I don't think I'd feel comfortable having one.

Hmm...my Gov & Pol instructor today pointed out the differences of someone up in Montana, little population, and NYC...it was a good point he made, that gun control is different for different people...

...on the other hand, bandits will always get ahold of them somehow.

Posted a full 7 years ago... How chilling considering what happened last friday in Connecticut. I pulled this thread up to see if anyone's thoughts about guns or gun control have changed in light of the many tragedies involving guns weve seen here and over seas. There seems to finally be some expression of "enough!" in this gun loving country since the last most incomprehensible recent shooting of 20 first graders by a lunatic wielding a Bushmaster AR-15 semiautomatic rifle. But who knows if it will last. The NRA is tremendously powerful in this country and operates in many ways as a shadow governing body. Im just wondering if there is anyone who thinks that semiautomatic combat weapons should continue to remain legally available for anyone to purchase. And high capacity magazines filled with ammunition designed to pierce tank armor. Is there a reason to have these available for purchase to the general public?

I fear it'll take more than this tragic event, sadly, to get the NRA to back down on what they consider fundamental rights. To the NRA the solution to each and every problem will always be 'more guns'. Already they're demanding every school gets their own armed security.

Here in Europe it's often pointed out that it's rather crazy that Kinder Surprise (chocolate eggs with little trinkets inside that can be assembled) is banned as dangerous in the USA but you can legally buy the most ludicrous weaponry.

Yeah, chances of the NRA backing down are pretty much nil. On the other hand, this year's string of tragedies has really shaken people.

Also, did anyone watch Obama's speech at the memorial? Mr. President is extra Not Happy with the state of gun control right now. There isn't all that much he can actually do about it directly, but the NRA should be feeling some definite pressure to start compromising.

In Norway, we're still debating whether the POLICE should be armed. At the moment, they have to apply to their superiors for a permit if they are expecting a situation where they may need a gun.

One of the arguments against them having their own gun available at any time (like the Police has in Sweden), is that it may accerbate (?) the climate and cause more use of guns among the criminals.

Hunters need to pass a test and to get a permit to own a gun, and there are rules for how guns should be stored in the home.
