Tie-Fighters

Anyone know why they're called "tie-fighters"?

In addition to the name, the lasers. Why are the "good guys" lasers red, and the "bad guys" lasers green, when the light sabers are just the opposite?

It should be written as TIE fighters, since TIE stands for Twin Ion Engine. Anyways, the lsers are those colors because the Empire is good, and the Rebellion is bad. *gasp!* Why would you call those who are rebelling against the legitimate government the good guys? The Galactic Empire was all about bringing peace and prosperity to the galaxy. Those Rebels were all about blasting authority figures our of the space lanes. *sniff*

I knew about the Twin Ion Engines, would that put me in geek territory? At first I thought they were called TIE-fighters because of the screeching noise they make. TIEIEIEIEEEE....

I don't see why knowing about the ion engines would make you a geek, but THAT does.

They weren't really lasers. They were blasters, which used a combination of laser light and gas (which varied according to type, and may have effected the color) to create a particle beam.

Then I suppose, as I am already lost in geek-kind, that it can't hurt mentioning that normally they shouldn't have been making any noise at all, 'cause there's no medium in space to relay any sound.

Well, your geekiness is the good kind. Bad geekiness results when a person knows a lot about bad C-grade movies or something like that.

NOT TRUE!!!!

There is air in space, obviously, and thus sound.

If there were no air, how would all of the air on our planet stay put, huh? Huh? If there were no air in space, there would be no air on earth because it would all get sucked into space.

Don't argue with me--I'm in college. I know what I'm talking about.

*throws a book, titled Basics of Physics, at Tessar*

Come back when you can breathe in space without air tanks, college boy.

What is "is space"?

Air is heavier than a vacuum so it sinks to the ground and stays on the earth.

Eärniel, does that physics book have pretty pictures that I could read? I would like to learn more about vacuums and air. I have heard that there are no vacuums in nature since nature abhors a vacuum.

You know, if people start asking me for advise on physics, the world really has gone done in a handbasket....

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't they still hear the noise inside the spacecraft? So even when it's showing the fighter from the outside it could still let you know how it sounds inside.

I never said anything about the inside. I'm thinking, normally they could then only hear the sound their own ship generates.

But if that is how it sounds inside, then I hope they have ear plugs.
