You sure have to consider how the kid would feel with a name out of Lord of the Rings, especially if it were Mithrandir or Denethor or, clutch the pearls, Bilbo! Can you imagine the little kid's peers getting hold of a name like Frodo or Bilbo or Ghan-buri-Ghan??

However, there are a couple of names one could use and not be ridiculed, such as Elanor or Sam or Bill.

It's tough on a kid having a name which is easy to ridicule, I'd hate to make life harder. Sort of like "A Boy Named Sue".

However, considering how I feel about children at this advanced age, I'd probably coin the example of a previous poster and call 'em Grishnakh Ugluk or Snaga Shagrat.

i agree with bropous, and in agreement with earlier posts, i'd have to say that if you WERE going to give your child a name from LOTR or tolkien, perhaps it would be best to make it their middle name(s)!

problem is, i don't like any boring names that children wouldn't be ridiculed for. two other favourite names of mine are valida and antianara - amazonian queen and warrior. so tolkienian or no, my kids will hate their names

But a lot of the names are really pretty. Dwarf names would be almost as bad as Orc names though. Still, not all would sound too odd:

Merry & Pippin are both very nice
Eowyn
Lobelia
Galadriel
Estel

Really, I would love to have a name like that. At least it's not your every day Tom and Bob.

I have an odd name, and because of it I have gone through a lot of ridicule (but trust me, it has to do with medication, of all things)

I used to hate it, but I like it now.

I think it's pretty. It's nice having an unusual name, that way you don't get confused with other people.

WTF? i must be really stupid, because i have no idea what the HELL "allegra" has to do with medication!

incidentally, i think it's quite a nice name! it's not very common, although it's not extremely bizarre, either.

Thank you! It is nice to have a different name then someone else, but I did meet someone with my name once, in Kansas City...how odd!

I love unusual names, and my kids are going to hate me for at least a little while because of their names...I'm lucky though, my sister was almost named Sky Blue (insert last name here), but my dad woudln't hear of it!

I have contemplated naming my first daughter Arwen...I think that is SUCH a pretty name. Maybe I'd spell it Arwyn. ::shrug::
