Sam saw his old friends after the Ring was destroyed. That is the only answer I can think of.

Trick question; Sam wasn't at the Field of Cormallen, he was on Mount Doom with Frodo awaiting death but getting picked up by eagles.

Yes he was. The Field of Cormallen was another name given to Ithilien after the Rings destruction, or so I think. If not then I meant Ithilien at the Feast.

Sam said he saw frodo, and his injured hand i think.
But he also saw gandalf after he awoke.
