yeah - it's basically the world against America (for the most part it had been like that), Americans versus Europeans or Europeans verus Americans, liberals versus republicans, religious versus non-religious. All the discussions in general messages are pretty much one side against another.

Believe it or not - Entmoot is in some respects less heated today than it was 2 years ago when threads had to be noted with "no american bashing". No matter what subject a thread was on two years ago - it always ended up that America was crap. Even the thread I had started called "what's your country like" which was supposed to foster understanding between the different countries ended up being a "bash america" thread. Overall - it may be less friendly to Europeans and liberals now, but that's mostly because I'm tired of the crap from 2 years ago - as are many others I know of. I'll throw back all the terrible things about Europe and the rest of the world does - just like so many felt it was completely acceptable to just **** on America.

If people want understanding and respect - they had better first re-earn it. People have a problem with the rolleyes - well what about the damn small print people use to make snide underhanded comments? I know of several who do that one and I consider that to be much more aggressive than the damn .

Basically what people want on entmoot is to say whatever they want without anyone lashing back at them. If I've been able to withstand the numerous attacks against me through the years then others should be able to handle it. If they can't handle it, then they should watch what they say.

Well actually - I don't consider you the worst offender - several others come to mind way before you do.

Just as long as you don't try moving up in the ranking.

And I disagree about the veneer. A lot of the 'Moot is inhabited by persons with a bit more sophistication than fanboy boards. I've never known a mooter yet that has left entmoot of his/her own freewill. Even Elfhelm returned for awhile!
Also, we're a more familiar crowd. It's more 'real' here, for lack of a better and less used word. We're not all such strangers to each other, and so when we fight we do less damage to each other than posters at other boards do. Political and religious discussions are stricly prohibited by many other boards for being too 'hot,' which is wrong IMO; it's juicy, interesting, and everyone has an opinion their entitled to, some of which will naturally go against yours. That seems to be the general belief here too. No (maybe 2 or 3) mooter seem to hold grudges. Thus the mods can ease up a little bit. That's what makes Entmoot so incredibly addicting.

That said the rolleye's OK. Plus, how much offense can seriously be taken by something so cute. It looks more bashful than sarcastic. It's smiling!

Wow... I originally thought hectorberlioz was commenting on the supposed beauty of the hair... just realised now that it's probably the "golden" part of it... *smacks self*

Yes. I've been on other boards where it seems that the word "religion" itself is banned... Of course, Bombadillo, the opposite holds true as well... We're not such strangers, so when we do fight for real, it's much deeper than at other boards.

It looks like a mischievous smirk to me.

This thread has gotten me curious.

How often do people roll their eyes in real life? I mean, seriously, I use that expression more frequently in person than I use it online. Although, come to think of it, that's not that much. I tend to try and be more subtle than that. For I am the Stealthy Sarcasm Ninja! Woh-pah!

Honestly, if the were removed, I would just use *rolls his eyes* when I wanted the same effect.

I don't mean to sound cutting, but I can say from my own experience that if you can't take a little flaming and a few insults you need to get a tougher skin before you try to hang out online.

That or you need to stop posting in threads where you know something you dislike will be used.

...striking from the shadows with Shuriken of Wit!

I don't often roll my eyes in real life, but you can tell if I'm making a sarcastic comment from the tone of my voice. The rolleyes smilie is the textual equivelant of sarcasm. That's how I use it.

Oh, that's right....take out the rolleyes smiley....then yer'd leave jD with no way to communicate effectively

Jokin' of course.....as a former starter of many thread fights, I know how valuable the rolleyes smilie can be......no quicker way to light a fire

And, I might add, it's an effective warning.

Generally if I'm browsing a serious debate, I'll ignore any posts by a person who uses the often, because to me it says that they aren't the kind of person who really take anyone but themselves seriously.
